Tips for getting a beat to sound like an old VHS/cassette?

I'm new to the Sp and production in general, but in lot of beats I hear on here the samples sound almost like Im listening to the sound of a beat up old vhs tape or cassette.Any tips on achieving that like for a synth sample or vocal sample.I love the way that stuff sounds:)

oh and I mean by starting with a clean sounding sample and turning it into a dusty,grimy one....

This is a great idea- Also you can put your finger on the drive cogs to introduce pitch warble and such by applying prssuer to slow the playback. Also you can use the vinyl sim flutter control as well. EQ you can roll off some hi, boost mids and lows a bit to taste.

your method of bouncing would be the most labor intensive yet unique and rewarding IMO. You could also try recording playback from cassette using the built in mic on the SP.

Just open up your SP and fill it with dust and maple syrup. Thats a trick a lot of people don't like to share.

i think what youre looking for is just the vinyl sim, knob furthest to the right. its basically just pitch modulation, you can set up an LFO routed to pitch if you use VSTs and get a similar effect. theres also a free plugin called 'wow and flutter' that works very nicely

i still dont get how vinyl sim only has one speed for the modulation but it always just sounds so good. i know there are a few things going on at the same time though. the compression on vinyl sim is beaaaut, i run all my samples through it before i chop them

VCRs are cheap and easy to include in your setup because it's just RCA cables. However, you probably want to set the tape to SP or whichever mode gives you the longest recording time, that will in itself introduce some grit as the recording is not as high quality (VCR tape is actually a really high quality source to record audio to).

Probably easier is to use a microphone (any cheap one will do) to record your computer or TV, then sample that.

If you have Logic Pro, you can actually use the tape delay plugin to introduce saturation and chop the top end and bottom end off the sound, which makes for some pretty convincing grit.

fuck around with the filters and add flutter. then eq or use the isolator at the end to adjust to your liking.

using a bit crusher or anything that degrades sound quality is useful also
