i resent that they constantly say that people like samiyam or flying lotus wouldnt even make beats if it wasnt for Dilla... i find that to be a really stupid thing to say

Fair call right here. It's not like boom bap, instrumental hip hop, swung drums & using synths in hip hop was invented by Dilla. Saying shit like Dilla's responsible for Samiyam & Flying Lotus undermines those fellas' own music, experiences & opinions. It's a pretty shallow thing to say.

Loads of things leads folk like us and them to make music. Don't forget money, spare time, social interactions & education are all just as important on the music you make as the music you've heard. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This along with the sheer volume of his work. Most people consider him the 'best' because the consistent quality in his massive volume of work, along with the fact that his catalog stretches over many genres that he sampled from, or made music in that style.

yeah that makes a lot of sense tbh... a good argument to put forward if you wanted to claim he was the best anyway.

i find the whole 'best' thing ridiculous. nobody ever goes around saying 'biggie was the best rapper by a clear mile' and then gets pissed off if you disagree. nobody calls rap after '97 'post biggie' but some idiots call the music i make 'post dilla'

the other thing for me is that he never really did anything special imo... its all just drums and pretty simple chops. Samiyam is hard to compare him to because of a much smaller discography amongst other things but the stuff he does blows Dilla out of the water when it comes to skills i reckon

i dunno... its all so stupid... i feel the same way about nujabes... its like he got legendry status for dying and then from then on people will over exaggerate how good his music was

lol whats that got to do with it? if samiyam told me that what he does is more skillful than most of the stuff Dilla is id think hes a big headed ego maniac... the best artists are the most humble anyway

im saying that imo (again... its hard to compare the two anyway) the things that samiyam does to put his beats together takes quite a bit more skill and musicality to pull it off. thats not to say that Dilla couldnt do it... just that for me if you only ever really chopped samples, did straight forward drums i dunno how you could ever be classed as the greatest by so many when he never really pushed any boundaries

but i actually dont want to get into comparisons too much and get sucked into those debates... really i wanted to know your views on why people say what they say about him, and if a lot of people take it too far... like my 'friends'

i heard aaronmaxwell's "lock it down" before i heard the original produced by dilla, and honestly, i was surprised at how much the dilla beat sucked lol

i really like his style of beats
and he's an inspirational human to me, much like bruce lee.
he was a man of music, hard working, and prolific.

i'm not a fan of all his creations but i still admire certain parts of how how he lived his life and his creative process.

I just listened to the entire Donuts album. I prob won't be listening again unless for "study". If I hear that air horn type sound one more time...

If the album had been from 20 years earlier maybe it would make more sense to me personally but otherwise he seemed like a nice guy who passed away tragically for health reasons and not from violence so hard to dis the guy!

The way he sampled and chopped that 10cc song on waves is incredible. Same with workinonit another 10cc sample.

My fav dilla work is RUFF DRAFT. Check it out if you like that raw shit. Crazy abstract samples choppin and looped.

If u want some synths check THE SHINING's body movin or even e=mc2 is dope microkorg/ms2000 on that track. Even that kazoo sample beat Geek Down was sick.

I have to say that donuts and rough draft are two records that ive played straight through more times than i could count. That being said my love for those records comes from the same place my love for any piece of art has, the way his songs impacted me, the way they hit me emotionally. I am not gonna call him the best because i think its a stupid statement and my own opinion of the best changes day to day.

Just listened to Ruff Draft, def way more interesting to my ear, thanks for the tip. I wish I could get a copy without the rapping, that would be dope. I get "bravado fatigue" from most rap and hip-hop.
