Recording over a pattern ? HELP

so I hear that if you want to record a synth over the top of a drum beat it is impossible ? WTF. does that mean you have to sample notes to pads and then play them ?

If this is true, are there any good workarounds

If it is not true, how do you do it.

You can record your drum beat into something else (computer, tapes, another sampler) as a reference. Then play it back and record your synth part into the sp.

so would an old 4 track be good. Anything you can suggest. that loops aswell and pitch
