I've been trying to arrange a track in the sequencer, but something strange is happening when I quantise. My process is choosing 4, 8, 16 or 32, then adding 1 sample to the places I want it to be, before hitting cancel and restarting the process with the next sample. By, say, the 3rd sample I'm quantising, 1 or more of the past samples I've quantised within the measure starts to go out, usually only slightly, as if it's forgotten the fact it's been quantised and is playing as if I've played it by ear.
Does anybody know if there's some kind of quantising limit akin to the voice limit of the SP? Can only a certain amount of samples be quantised within a measure? Thanks!

Re: Quantise troubles with the SX
It shouldn't be cutting the quantizing. My guess is your quantizing isn't matching the previous 'layers'...I think only one quantize grid is allowed per pattern. This is from memory, but I believe that the SPs with sequencers will remember the original placement of the notes and the quantize is done on the fly (i.e., the notes aren't moved in memory, they're moved during playback only)...
So that's my guess...you're changing to higher resultion and those notes are being moved because of it.

Oh damn this is good info to know- will def be testing out to confirm.

Thanks! I'll try some things out and report back. Think I was just adding layers bit by bit with different grids, so the changing to 16 would have set some other samples out of synch if this is true...
Re: Quantise troubles with the SX
I've never had troubles changing my quantize mode. The only thing you need to remember is that each time you hit "record" for laying down your pads in a pattern you need to go back and specify which quantize mode you will use. My OG404 will not remember the last quantize option I selected.
Re: Quantise troubles with the SX
So it appears to me that quantized Patterns do actually "print" the quantization to memory.
I laid down a swing beat with 5.8q setting then stopped and re-recorded (without playing any pads) with q setting at 4 and nothing changed. (If q setting was on "play only" for example the swing notes should have lost their swing and become straight notes)
I then added a beat on same pattern but with q at 4 and the new beat had no swing (was quantized to quarter notes) and the previous beat with swing remained unchanged.
So it seems whatever q you use "sticks" and that is that. If you want to add more layers with diff q setting afterwards you can and everything you recorded will remain the same, but you can have both swing and straight feel within the same Pattern.

PS-
On a side note I have been using my padKontrol and I am really digging it (the roll button and flam are why I bought it) but sadly you cannot use an external controller while resampling which is too bad as I am just beginning to explore the resampling composition technique and seeing how powerful and fast it is vs the Pattern sequencer. Def gets your body more connected to the beats when you let go of quantize.

Re: Quantise troubles with the SX
Should've known Roland would switch things up. I assumed 404 quantize behaved like 505 when I used it eons ago. You could change the quantize on the fly, giving the impression that the notes were written down per tick and moved during playback to meet the quantize level.
Good info for those who use the 404 sequencer, though. Thanks!
