Picked up an OG 404 last September and really got serious with it a just a few months ago. I ended up selling my MPD32 and picking up a 404SX to speed up my workflow. So far it's been a lovely combination. Any essential tips for using two SPs? I've been toying around with mute groups and a few other things for starters but I'm just wondering if theres some good techniques I might be missing. Also if anyone has some advice on organization I've found that my samples get so mixed up after a few hours of messing around and resampling.
I started with a sp-303, sold that to get a sp-404sx for the SD card, and then picked up another sp-303 to get that dual wield. I have been using the 303 a lot to bounce tracks back to the 404 and then copy the track off of the sd card right onto my computer. Using both samplers, I've noticed it's not too hard to keep the bpm of a loop through a few bounces by always setting the bpm before recording in using the "TIME/BPM" button. Keep the loop playing on one sampler and then start recording on the right beat, leave a little extra at the end of the loop to get the beginning of the next loop and finish recording. That will leave you with the sample cut to the specific bpm you gave it and if it sounds great as is you can truncate the ends off (by pressing delete, the sample pad, the mark button, and delete).
With that I can get both the 303 and 404's effects built up with a few bounces. I'm hoping to start planning out some songs to play in a more live setting using both the samplers. I figure that with samples on each I can transition between songs/loops using each one's effects. It will also relieve some pressure on polyphony so I can get more pads playing.
Another trick I came onto was plugging each output into the other's input and turning on both ext ins. This gave me a unique delay effect as the sound got sent, returned, and repeated. I had earphones into only one sampler and adjusted each sampler's volume to get the right feedback level.
