I know there' already a post like this but I couldn't find it through search. Anyway, how do you guys go about doing beat sets? Do you already have the beat made and on pads? Do you just bang the drums live? I'm clueless :?

i think most peeps just have their beats recorded in their entirety on individual pads.

The more skills shown, the better the show will be, so I say the set should be planned and practiced similar to a turntablist routine. If you just do the same tricks as the last guy, it wouldn't be nearly as effective as using a unique technique that perplexes the crowd.

I use Ableton Live. I'll import loops from my beats, so I'll have the intro looped, the verse looped, chorus looped etc. Means I've got flexibility in keeping things playing and can jump around. Then I manipulate the FX live.

i doubt the technique in performance really matters. i mean a turntablist will perform his routine like he'd do in his creative process cause thats what a turntablist do.
most producers dont have any routine to transpose on live sets when making tracks and matter fact, a lot of cats do resampling shit and cant even tap out a drum beat while playing keys but are still greeeat beatmakers.

as long as u dont look like you just press play and stand back, its cool i think.
doing a complex performance wont make your music sound any better.

I see your point, but its really cool to see someone rockin the fuck out on the SP live with some ill techniques, that's all I'm sayin'. If the beatmaker isn't doing much besides playing the beat, that's not much of a performance, if you ask me. You might as well just be a DJ who only plays your own shit. But what do I know..

yea i mean its a matter of opinion really.
personnally the performance itself wont really matter to me, as long as the music is good, im cool with it. i understand that some people like to see physical skills and all that jazz tho.

I like messing with some of the effects when i have a live beat going. (delay, isolator, djfxlooper, way, reverb, echo) It can really add a bunch to what you're doing if done right. People overuse the fuck out of the djfx looper and that can get annoying quick.
