whats your favorite instrument to sample?

Post by LAZER BEAR »

So when you are listening to records or whatever you listen to, what's the instrument that makes you stop what you're doing and bust out the sampler when you hear a solo? Mine is the good ol' Fender Rhodes, or electric piano. Any keyboard instrument that has that nice glittery sound to it. Any time I find a Rhodes break on a record I jump on it, and anytime I hear a beat with Rhodes samples it makes my heart melt. Vibes are cool too but nothing beats a Rhodes IMO.

I'm with you on any whirlitzer or rhodes electric pianos, but more than that, it's more or less I like instrument outtakes...solo stuff. I can always bend their use to the situation so any time I find solo instruments, I tend to make a mental note of it. Even orchestral stuff I'll sample if it's a long chord or long note or something.

However, I do like loops that just scream 'here, smoke this and everything will be fine.'

I don't, of course, smoke weed, but I used to and some stuff I hear just take me back....

Some people have really good ear for that kind of stuff. However, sometimes it could just be the presentation of whatever passage that makes it worth while. I think that's what makes sampling so interesting...it can go both ways. You can take bits from lots of different things and create something new, or you can take one thing and make it your own, effectively spreading your musical tastes via your own flips.

Very interesting. I always get angry at peeps who think that sampling is cheating or is ripping off. Usually those people have the most narrow view of music overall. People that do a lot of sampling tend to have the widest ranges of musical taste and appreciate any and all music. That's why SP forums overall is so dope. So much passion for music in any form here and no preconcieved notion of what is or isn't music, what is or isn't talent, etc. It's all just artform. And that's what it should be. :)

Naw, first paragraph had the answer...i just went off on a tangent.

Mostly EP's (Whirlitzer, Rhodes, etc) but any lone instrument solo I'm down to sample.

But overall, I tend to gravitate towards smooth whirlitzers grooves.

Just messing with you man. And I totally agree with your point about gravitating towards sampling any solo instrument, it has a great appeal because you can do a lot more with it. I like to sample multiple instruments at once too, but when I hear a good solo part I either grab the SP or make a mental note of it.

Piano is always my fav probably because its the easiest to chop and manipulate. I like jazz guitar too. Of course im not even mentioning drums since that is a given on the sp.
