mpc 2000, few specific questions.

Hey all,
I got a mpc 2000 on the way. Got it for dumb cheap so i couldn't pass it up. Its only coming with the 2mb of ram and the floppy drive.
1. Is the scsi zip drive absolutely necessary?
2. how much sampling time does 2mb give you in the mpc world.

Im pretty much trying to rock it as a midi sequencer and shift from samples to synths. Just thought that i can route the synths to a mixer and sequence em in the mpc. Then maybe those 2mb could be used for choppin breaks and drum hits. Just think its a big waste to not use the mpc for more than sequencing but fuck it. Im just weary of using the floppy disc since i never ever even touched a floppy disc in my life but i see a ton of mpc heads with stacks of floppy disc and im always like "how in the fuck".

I'm fairly sure Damu the Fudgemunk uses an unexpanded mpc2000 and doesn't seem to have any problems.

scsi is not nessesarry but it's nice to have the leg room
to get the most of a floppy disk you gotta record in at 45rpm +4.5% (or 75rpm +4.5% if you can and want to save even more room) on your turntable, then slow it down to normal speed inside the mpc. chances are this is what damu does.. since your guna be using synths you cant do this trick (unless you played everything in super high pitched and fast) so you may need the zip disk to help you out. floppy is cool, but tiring.. and shitty when your trying to save a beat and have to save it to like 3 different disks.

Right on. damu does do that 45rpm thing, i forget what its called. "Aliasing" or something. I think that a term for video production so im probably way off. Ill look into the sip drive cause it would be a pain in the ass to save a beat to multiple floppies. I had the mpc 1k in the past and all that noise seemed to be a thing of the past. Now im going backwards. If it wasn;t 250, i probably would have avoided it. People still selling un-souped up mpc 2000's for like 600 bucks. Like wtf. Funny to even see the vintage tr's and tb's still going for a grand when all the samples are available for download everywhere. You could probably get tr-808 samples with a happy meal at mickie-d's.

Not necessary. Since the pitch and stuff is pretty rad and program info doesn't take up much room, you shouldn't have too many problems with this thing. Also you can load samples and programs from multiple disks while controlling your synths and shit. I had to recently sell mine for 200 (luckily to a friend) because I'm moving and need money for a deposit. Currently I'm trying to make my quneo and ableton act like the 2000. Funny how time and tech work.

Ableton will work just like the mpc, just gotta do a ton more fiddling than on the mpc. Like, everything about ableton is great, just gotta fiddle like a mother fucker to do any of it.

Do you know (in seconds) how much sample time you get with the 2mb? I remember going nuts with the 1k and not really seeing that much space being taken up. 2mb aint worth a dam tho but the max 32 might be a blessing.

You missed out man thereis one on ebay with maxed out internal memory 32mb with a stack of floppys going for pretty cheap. i thing the starting bid is like 250.00

The stack of floppies is the best part of that deal. Those things were surprisingly hard to find. Got some at a rradioshack for half off on a clearance rack.

They sell floppies on amazon, fresh ones. As fart as the price, i got it for 250 buy it now. So i got the good deal. Someone needs to grab that other pone but the bidding ill take it to about 500 bucks. Thats why i avoid auctions and just go for the buy it nows.

another question. I think it came with 32mb of ram. In the disk window i see 191k for the floppy im assuming and then

32mb right above the seq free.
The window is a bit different then the 1k but i think thats the 32 mb of ram. Guess the dude didnt know. So i got 8 outs and 32 mb for 250. fuck yeah!
