I see no problem with someone not being interested in sharing their music,
music does not have to be a form of communication.
As long as it satisfies you, why is there a problem there?

I think internet downloading is good for artists if they are solid artists. if they have quality.

I buy everything on cd, sometimes i'll go through a 'new' vinyl binge but generally it's charity shop stuff. I don't like paying for something that is not tangible. On band camp I only download stuff that's up there for free as I think at that level surely getting your music heard is the most important thing. Once someone's gone through the mill and actually managed to get a cd out then i'm more happy to pay, they've clearly been working on their craft for some time. Of course this isn't always the case but i think charging for music when you're unknown is just alienating your audience. As for piracy i'm against it, if you've bought something make some copies for your friends, no problem with that, it's been happening for years, but file sharing is impersonal and, to my mind, outright theft.

This is one of the silliest things I've ever read.

You don't think poor artists should have an outlet to make money unless they get signed.. Have a name. Street cred.. Fan base... Cdzzzz

You think its okay to make physical copies of someone else's work to give to your friends... If You payed for it

Files sharing is impersonal because you can't put a face to the person you are ripping off....

But you expect people to share their free impersonal music with you., even though you state that it's theft.

In all reality we.. The artists, take a lot of time to release something on our own because we feel like it's special and it came from the heart. Creative expression and pride is the reason things cost money on band camp. If I download a free full album off band camp, I usually don't visit that artist again or take the time to listen all the way through unless the album has feeling and instantiated an emotion.
If it's a microwave slop fest than yes, put it up for free. I've done it. I'm guilty, and I would never charge for that shit. If your music is good you will find a fan base regardless of how many releases you've had or how much your shit has been downloaded for free or $$

If someone can't find 5$ £¢€¥ for an artist they respect who just put out a digital download., they should probably get a job. It's about community and supporting poor artists. If we were all established and rich we wouldn't be posting on sp forums., while sitting beside our used Craigslist gear.

You should probably take some of your cd money and put it towards some people like yourself trying to afford new gear,.etc that's charity.

Totally fair points, I didn't put across what i meant by impersonal. For me it's more about suggesting music to people, not just trawling the net and downloading all you can because it's free. The mix tape is gone now but i used to love making those for people, now I lend people stuff I think they'd like. And it's not so much that people don't deserve money if they're not signed, it's that a digital download holds less worth for me than a hard copy. I also like the record industry and like to support it. I support unsigned musicians by going to gigs and spreading the word. I dunno, probably not saying it right!

Totally agree with going to local shows.
I think I took it a little personal.
I couldn't understand the cd support $ to a charity when there are 3 dozen sp forums users that need your support because they may not be fortunate enough to live in a city that gives them the outlet to showcase their music.
I live in one of those cities the only way for me to showcase is to make sp forums tapes for 99 cents which is turned into more music.

I'm all for pirating the big dogs who have burned me in the past with shitty product.

I fully agree in physical material but it's not going to last. Try and embrace the digital format regardless . It's all about the music.

Absolutely man, always! I think I put it the wrong way, this forums been a revelation for me, and the fact people just want to be heard is something I love. I hate my day job as much as the next guy but don't wanna put people off by charging for music. Anyways, sorry if i caused offence, totally not intentional!

i used to love getting mix tapes from people. if there was something good on it, i'd look for it at the store, check it out live, and tell my friends. there will always be that chance that people exposed to music without having paid for it themselves will do the same. I feel like this is helpful for the artist.

i've been in many situations where the only reason someone came out to see my band while on tour is because they streamed the music free online, or someone burned them a copy of one of our records. those people then paid to get in, bought a 7" or lp or shirt, or offered us a comfortable place to crash.
