Bouncing drums from tape for compression

If you're like me, once you've stringed together some sample chops, you get anal about what drums to put with the track.
Any drums that I sample in and don't use I bounce to tape. So I got cassettes labeled "kicks", "snare", etc. that are archives of stuff I found in my vinyl collection while listening on my digs, but haven't yet used.

Well, the tape deck I use has a recording level knob. And I've found that pushing the input signal a little over the red while recording gives drum sounds a bit of a compressed feel to them when dubbed to tape.

I used to be a sample snob and HAD to pluck samples from dropping on vinyl.
But now I like the crackle and pop from vinyl samples, with the added saturation and tape characteristic from those clips taken off cassette.
Plus, from a storage standpoint, tapes are a great way to backup your sound library as they are quite durable.

So don't be afraid to push the levels a little above the green for a great lo-fi quality on your drum kit builds.

I had a collection of tape samples, mostly drums, that were bounced from a portastudio onto hard disk..

I would like to break the old portastudio out again soon but my workspace is crowded with records and comic books, Ideally I would always have it plugged into the rack/chain somehow..

I started a tape with drums but after like 3 sounds, I just started saving the sounds on my 303s SM card.

Good stuff. I actually have about 90 minutes of drum breaks from various sources on a tape just labeled 'DRUMZ' that I always pull out for my tunes.
