how the hell do you find the right drums??

i was making a beat today and i realized the hardest part for me is finding the correct drums to fit the sample. i have so many drums kits, so many drum breaks, and ill import a handful of kits/breaks and they will never fit the sample. ive been doin this for 3 years and its always the hardest part. ill sit on ill samples for literally weeks and not be able to do anything with them. is this an issue for anyone? how do u deal with drums? what are some good tips!?!

For me, sometimes i can pull em from what i sample. Otherwise. I take a break and fatten it up with some sub bass or other snares/HH/BD from this Mophatt Module that i have.

Check your old beats and figure out what drum sounds you like the most.

Could it be that the drum sounds aren't that bad, but your not happy with your programming?

I always hate my snare drums, but I find that if I don't like my drum loop I'll approach it differently. Delete my loop but keep the samples and play it differently. Listen to some track before hand to give you some ideas too, that always helps me

Not sure if you're the same.. but to me - I start with the drums and obsess over them - they're never good enough.

But the thing is they sound alot better when the rest of the song is there.. If I get other elements down, I dont have the drum problem as much, because its just my perspective.

You can also listen to the drums of your sample (or sampled song) and try to recreate them with your arsenal of drums and with a little bit of "in haze" flavour and spices.

Ever tried pitching your drums so they're roughly in tune with the rest of the song? It can make a huge difference.

Or try using drums from a similar source to what the rest of the samples are. If you sample a rock song for a beat, use rock drums etc.

Strangely enough, I find that if I'm sampling a 1974 record from spain, then I'll have to get drums from another 1974 record from Spain. Not necessary from the same record but from the same time and place. Most times its works and sticks together.

Other times, I'll do drums exactly like the source I'm sampling but amplify that mofo so it drowns out the weaker drums.

pitching is a great suggestion. huge problem for a lot of amateur producers. i disagree with always matching drums and samples via year/culture. why can't you take an accordion loop and put a roland tr kit over it? (oh wait, madlib already murdered that)...

i always compress the drums and samples together to help blend them

interesting tips guys! i know i can always count on the sp forums. a bunch of nice cats i respect that. but seriously tho, i really appreciate all the tips its a huge help. i think i realized a big problem of mine was that i dont mix it well with the effects, like ill do the vinyl effect on the drums and then leave the sample be, i guess i just gotta make it flow together.

the pitch definitely works to some extent too. i just tried it out and it was solid

Very nice cats indeed. BTW try turning down your samples before doing drums, then use mfx12 compression(this is on the 303, idk what comp is on other models).

I get a lot of my drum samples from my alesis sr-18 drum machine. When it comes to drums I make sure the kick thumps and the snare cracks. That's all I care about. EQ and compression on every drum. Always.

3 I used to try to do drum via resample, and it work for a while until I found out I kinda always did the same thing. I use the microsampler sequencer now and I try different stuff.



(I also ALWAYS use the same kit or so with 2-3 new random hit I get every now ansd then)
