Yo! SP- Forums! Yall are tight, been reading up for the past few days seeing as I just copped a 404-SX. Theres so much potential in that little box its crazy... As everyone says VERY creative.
Alright. So my dad used to do a bit of producing himself, so im really privileged to have all of his old gear at my disposal. Ive been getting into making some beats. Ive been doing it for just about a year now, and i wanna take it to the next level.
Gear that can add some love to my productions
- Fostex DMT - 8(lovin the name)
- Tascam MSR-16
Sony-A6 - Cassete recorder
An old Advent 201
Dual MP - Tube Mic Pre amp
Helicon voice prism
Lexicon MS 200
DBX 266 XL Compressor gate.
Im going to be posting much more on here soon explaining my gear/pleas for help. I will admit i think i know a lot, but i know that i dont. Maybe subconsciously since my pops has been doing ish for a while.
How will different routing combinations affect the end product sound, I have no idea where to start, Ive been left with so much... Im overwhelmed. Shout outs for some Help SP forums!
Thanks
, Its ya boy... Devoye

How will Different gear affect the sound of your Production
Tried some New Styles with this beat tape. I dont wanna sound the same as others but take that little bit of influence.

Hahaha! Welcome mate!Theboydevoye wrote:Common, some one welcome me in right
A lot of that gear looks like your dad was doing something totally different to where you'll probably go with the SP. That's a bunch of tape decks, got much tape to run through them? Be prepared to get some real jelousy from this place- dudes love their tape here! Even though I know nothing about it...
The rackmount gear looks sweet! I got a DBX 266XS (the update of your dad's compressor), it works a charm without colouring sound too much when used right. Plus it can sidechain, should be able to do that on your DBX too. How's the Helicon & Lexicon? You like them?
How do you use all this stuff? Have you had it long or only just picked it up?
Knowing nothing about how you use all that stuff here's what I'd set up:
1, Sample source (vinyl, CD, whatever) through Helicon through SP into (cleanest sounding) tape deck.
2, Resample from that tape deck back into the SP.
3, Record SP through DBX through Lexicon into (favourite sounding) tape deck.
The Helicon's for treating the sample source & grabbing weird sounds, honestly I think I'd end up bypassing it a bunch so it doesn't become boring. Use the DBX & Helicon minimally. The subtle differences from those two will work wonders for post-production.
Have you posted any of your beats online? It'd be cool to hear all that stuff in action.

How does the tubed mic preamp affect the sound? Before or perhaps after recording on a tape?

I can boost the Gain a bunch before it clips. It warms the sound up plenty. I do it before i pop it on tape. then I have this puig child plugin on ableton that i do specific settings on to get sort of a pumping action going on with the whole track.

first and foremost the thing I would say is just to play!
figure out what each piece does just by playing with it, play with different combinations... you've been left with some cool stuff
if you need some hints on what does what, you can find tutorials on youtube for different types of gear that will basically all function the same, regardless of brand/model
