Warmth!

Besides vinyl sim on 404 what else is good to use to get warmth? I've heard about the walkman. I also considered buying a 202 to run through the final mix. What do you guys think?

lot of stuff brrruhhh... old samplers (akai s950 s1000 etc..) tapes, vinyls, reels..
one of my friend even used to hook up guitar pedals on his mixes.
and thats when i learned that a graphic fuzz by electro harmonix can fuck up your synths and drums radically or on the other hand just enhance its grit and warmthhhhhzhhtzhhth

I think that running sound through these boxes adds compression to the signal as well which can be nice.

Anything analog will take the edge off. Tubes, tapes, etc.

Probably not the answer your looking for, but vinyl plays a huge part in that grimey sound you hear. I copped a old Dramatics joint with no sleeve out a 50 cent bin last week. The record was caked in dust and the beat I made off it sounded mad dirty.

little teeny bit of reverb, and try running through a mixer before recording your beat, this will pre-e Q the mix to your liking and save you from having to mess with your recording. recording to tape will also give you a rich warm sound, you may need to eq this aswell .

what i've been doing is taking my finished beat, run it through my tascam tape recorder (this is what gives it the most warmth), and then back to my sp and add mfx12.

you dont need a tascam for warmth, i used to use one and it sounds cool but takes alot away from the quality, just put warm dusty samples into the sp and you'll get some warm shit coming out

Im sure people have said this but. Any analogue gear pretty much you can run things through.

I run things through a mic pre amp into a compressor into a lexicon reverb. When im really done with a track ill pass it through L/R through a mixer w/ an eq on it for some dynamic in the song, then it all passes through a 1/2 inch tape machine to give it that nice saturation.

Resample after CTRL1=0 Vinyl Sim and then apply Filter + Drive until you find a sweet spot.

Other then that, be creative with sample sources and compression + verb.

Use any other tools you got (DAW, MPC, VCR, whatev.)

Buy an analog sampler. Then you don't have to try to make it warm it just is.

If you have an analog DJ mixer (such as a common vestax) the eq section and trim knob can shape some of the sounds well.

Buying an old sampler and using the relative techniques will take care of some of the work you would be doing without. Recording to Reel to Reel helps alot too.

Instead of using your EQ to bolster certain sounds, try adding a tinge of distortion to the frequencies you want to exaggerate.

If you feel that during mixing drums you lose your low end ( I do when resampling lo-fi enough times on 303) consider using an analog multimode filter to sample the sub bass of the original sample, and layer it under the new sample.
