Spent most nights this week forcing myself to learn Ableton, after a bit it finally clicked for me. Now got it setup how I like it and flying, making a few rough beats a night just getting the hang of it. Ableton + MPD + 404 combo all day from now on.
Either do drums and stuff in 404 and sample into audio loop in ableton and build on it from there then back into the 404.

SP 404 OG
Re: Music Programs.
For my part I have to say Ableton is one of the best programs to be creative with. I have used it for 1 1/2 years until my pc broke a week ago..
Although it is hard to learn how to use it, like roygbivs said you have to spend at least a couple of nights to really get started with it the flexibity of this program is incredible! I loved the warping technique, great tool to make your samples work in the way you want them to.
I never used ableton together with my SP-404OG though, might be fun and having a setup with both of them gives you nearly endless possibilities.
But now that I have to go back to the SP, I realized that, with the SP, beats tend to sound more "natural" (there is a word for that but I cannot remember right now) .. I like that warm sound of it.
I also found that with my pc beats did not sound as good as those that I did on the SP although those made with ableton were pretty complex.
Of course, working with Ableton makes you able to create very complex beats and makes it easier to work with tough samples but it is hard to beat that analog sound and the boost for your creativity you get out of the SP, at least for me.

I've listened to your stuff before. And I just listened to some of your recent stuff. And, it's beautiful. You're a good digger. I like the samples you chop up.
In my opinion, all a GOOD sample-based producer needs is a turntable, records, sampler, and something to record into.
I'm not against computer stuff for beat-making.
I think it's great for stuff like mixing and mastering. It makes quick time with things like leveling out stuff and EQ.
But I don't like the digital, computer-y sound software adds to the sound characteristic.
Some like the workflow aspect of being able to "see the music", with a waveform and all.
I think a good ear will listen more acutely to the details when there's no screen involved, and it's just buttons, knobs, and sound pumping out speakers.
Yeah thanks man! Usually i'll just try my best to start flowing over the sample. Give it that natural swing if you what I mean.
