critique my synth work

at 1:08 a synth kicks in. i want to know what you guys think of it; like does it sound cheesy, is it mixed in well? this is just a beta version of this beat; im gonna add more synths and fx.

I like the chords. A lot. Sounds great with the loop.

Its too high in the mix. And the notes sound out of key at times. It just doesn't blend in well with the track. Not to be harsh but you said you wanted critique.

thanks for the criticism dont worry about being harsh. i noticed that too, it sounded weird in the mix. Im definitely doing the track over. on a side note, i really wanna learn music theory; im not trained and i dont play any instruments.

The easiest way to learn to play keys quick is to just Google scales. That will be a good jumping off point. After learning a scale you then just learn to build chords from that and that's enough to get by.

As a demo, it's fine. Sounds rough & ready, but you seem to know where you want to go with the melody so refine it. Jamming's nice but when you know a riff you can do so much more with it. To be honest I'd love to be able to play some of the funky little fills you found (I came from a background where music is played VERY differently to this).

With a few more layers of synth (pads, rhythm, bass) it wouldn't sound so harsh over the sampled parts.

Learning theory's the right idea, from there you can do anything you want in music. Keep practicing, recording & you'll do fine!

the sample section wasn't defined well enough in the audio spectrum. I found it hard to discern notes and all that. So when the synth came in, I wasn't sure what it was playing to. That's all I can say about it. I'm listening to the track in expensive cans, btw. It might sound better on monitors but for a 'proper' mix down, it should sound fairly okay regardless of what it's being listened on. That's the general rule of thumb. You can make sure it sounds best using certain playback equipment, but it shouldn't be too messy on other listening devices.

Whoa, wasn't expecting to get so much dope feedback. Thanks alot guys. And Unfolding, I learned how to "play" like that from listening to P-Funk. I'm from California so alot of the older people listen to George Clinton and Zapp. Hseiken, i know what you mean; the sample was some weird ill intro off a David Sandborn record and there aren't really any defined notes playing in some parts of it.
