Can you guys help me identify this kind of jazz?

Post by Eureka »

sup yall, I've been trying to find artists/genres that fit these specific kinds of sounds that I believe are jazz. Can you help me pinpoint a genre for these sounds and perhaps help me find older artists that inspired these tracks?

Firstly, this portion of this track by Tyler, the Creator is exactly some of the stuff I'm looking for: Skip to 0:28

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6G8B8PR3Oc

I know he's getting that inspiration to write those melodies SOMEWHERE, and I've heard this kind of stuff before, and always thought it was jazz, but now I'm looking for a more specific label. Any tracks like that with smooth, spacey kind of atmospheres?

Also, I've always been mesmerized by this track by Amon Tobin: Skip to 1:41

That reaaallly smooth Rhodes melody has got to be from something, I highly doubt he just pulled that out of his ass. Anything like that that he might have been inspired by?

Finally, what are these two things called? Is there a specific genre these joints could fall under? Thanks in advance.

Check out Ronnie Laws - Tidal Wave. Is that the kinda stuff you're looking for? If so, I guess you could call it avant garde jazz fusion. This, bossa nova, and prog rock jazz fusion are my favorite subgenres of jazz.
