Which monotron is the best?
Going to buy one today and was wondering which one is the best. I know I_kil_animals uses one and he's sick with it.
Re: Which monotron is the best?
it depends on what you want to do with it. the classic is good overall, the delay is good if you want to add dub style echo to things, and the duo is best if you dont have a need to do LFO stuff really.
I have a gen 1 and feel like i dont use it is much as i could.

that'll probably be the next thing I grab after messing with the monotron for a while.springwater wrote:the monotribe with the midi set up is pretty sweet as well.

the midi hook up is pretty easy. The only hard part is waiting for it to come from brazil. Took like 2.5 weeks. Well worth it tho. That ribbon controller becomes a pain in the ass. Sampling the sounds is cool but i like switching waves and filtering mid loop.

As long as if it's worth the wait, and yeah I hear you man i'm mainly just experimenting with. Seeing what I can do with it.springwater wrote:the midi hook up is pretty easy. Re: Which monotron is the best?
Monotrons are cool, but built like shit. All of Korgs newer tiny machines are built like shit. They don't solder the connections very good. The headphone out on my Montoron delay seperated from the circuit board, as well as the switch for the mic on my MiniKP2(no luck solder them back on.. I actually think the solder points ripped out of the boards). I ruined my OG monotron trying to add midi to it, so that was my bad.
However, the Monotibe is pretty solid. The only thing I do not like is when you filter out the sound while playing, you can hear some tiny clicks when the notes play. Not bad though. MIDI is Godsent for the machine. I've had my 1st Monotribe for about 8 months, and the batteries just died on me today. It LASTS!
I bought this kit for the Monotribes: http://www.ebay.com/itm/150977363921?ss ... 1497.l2649. It ships fast(from Michigan), and has 1/8" midi connectors(comes with the Midi to 1/8" cables). You just need a dremel and a drill bit to use on metal to drill 2 little holes in your monotribe.
Here's the project I've been working on. I just finished modding the case a few minutes ago. Still waiting on a Midi Router to control each Monotribe individually since the Monotribes are fixed at Midi channel 1. Right now, I'm controlling the 2 monotribes as if I had 1 monotribe with 2 oscillators. With the delay pedal, the sounds are fucking awesome. What you don't see is the QY70 that is used to control the Monotribes.

Re: Which monotron is the best?
Yeah, i was suprised at the amount of use i could get out of those cheap ass batteries. I ended up just using the cable from the korg quad until i ordered a adapter for the monotribe. Put the batteries in 404 and they are still rocking.
That sucks about the miditribe man, dont know how you screwed it up, probably popped a cord trying to lift the back off. I hate the pops too. Even when your just hitting notes you can hear it but i just act like its a part of the process, like i intentionally added that grit to it.

Re: Which monotron is the best?
Hm. 2 osc. Nice. Thats a dam good idea sir. The thing is just fucking fun to play with once you have midi and can make a dope ass bassline and tweak the sound but 2 of em would be cool as shit. Run em both through a mixer or pedals and tweak em separately. Thanks for the idea. Sucks about the midi lock on channel 1. I have a monotribe and a meeblip (which makes some strange shit if you work hard enough on it) and the mee blip can change midi channels. So monotribe on channel 1 and meeblip on 2 and ive used fruityloops to play em both. Once i got my loops, i mangle the shit out of em and record em all.
Re: Which monotron is the best?
Thanks man. I'd love to have the skills of an electrician. For reals, the kit I got for the Monotron( http://beatnic.jp/products/midi-if-kit-for-monotron/) was nothing I've ever attempted to put together. I followed the instructions carefully and got my sequencer controlling it, but I hear only clicks. I think my soldering skills just suck. The guy that sells the kits can pre-assemble it for you for some extra Yen. The thing I wanted with a midi monotron was to have portamento/glide, which the kit offered. The monotribe midi mod kits do not offer that at all.
You should go for duo monotribes. Yeah, the sound coming from both at the same time is super phat and far from a toy. Another good cheap synth is the SX-150 mk2.
