drumming on the SPs

i find it kinda hard to create a different type of drum beat than just the basic boom bap one...i mean its a great drum beat, but im trying to switch it up to new beats but i dunno i never really get anywhere..

how do you go about creating drum patterns on the SPs?

i also have the dr-202 but i mostly just use that to sample drum hits into my SP and play them out.

I play it live or build it via loops, bust mostly play it live. practice practice practice and you will be able to get more out of it. got an example of what you're trying to get?

I find you can get really different results playing the kick, snare, and hats all at once and recording that versus overdubbing them separately (i.e. by resampling or the pattern sequencer). I generally try to let the chops (or bassline) guide the drums.

You could also listen to whatever genre and pay attention to how that song laid down it's drums. It might give you inspiration for laying down new patterns.

it's definitely easier for me to play live rather than building the drums piece by piece. i'll just keep practicing

single layer by layer reminds me of the sp1200 style looseness/free form MF Doom style

using a drum loop you've played is like Madlib - then layerring over each sound layer with same drum loop repeated.. as tempo setter

the playing all the single hits in a sequence (including song samples also) in a take gives more unique patterns .. reminds me more of Dilla - watch out for the polyphony though specially on 404's (might wanna chop in mono then add some stereoiing later on)
