sub bass - a kick with a high low end and a bit of treble
then some limiting and a little compression!
balance is key!!!!

this, however, is horrible advice, and tends to be what i do when i CAN'T get good lows.[/quote]

There are many ways on using a compressor. If you want to keep things steady :
Fast attack -Slow Release
For adding some spark:
Medium attack-Medium Release
For transient shaping and bumping:
Slow attack - Medium/Fast Release with a limiter waiting
And my favorite for bass and drums is NY style parallel compression(dry&wet signal together in the mix!)

Low pass filter.
Get a multi-band equalizer and run your sampling source into that and bump-n-boost EQ to your desire.

daamn this is a old topic haha i like the work around where you record an uncompressed copy of your beat into the tape recorder or computer and then just record it back into the sp with bass on top
