Techniques on a gated reverb 80s snare sound on 404sx
what steps do you guys use to achieve this sound in the style of prince and phil collins?

If you wanna do it in an SP, resample the snare with reverb & compression in the wrong order. In the 606 I'll do it in one step, but if you're a 555/404/303 dude its a 2 step process.
1- resample the snare with a short reverb, have it sound fairly wet (100% wet is OK, go by your own ears)
2- resample the snare again with compression, make sure the release is fairly long. The idea is to make the reverb's decay sustain as long as possible then drop off.
You can even add a step before 1 where you resample with the isolator to thicken the drums before adding reverb. Raise levels instead of removing them. Simple stuff, raise low for kicks, mid for snare & high for hats.
Be prepared to mess with that kind of set up a few times before you get a sound that you like for yourself.

why not just sample an 80s snare? those records are pretty common in dollar bins
