scratching

yo whats up i wanna know if its possible to scratch a beat without using a turntable? obviously this is lame and avoiding the true way of doing it, but its not vital for me so im not gonna buy equipment to scratch...just would like it as an added bonus to my beats. maybe theres software that sounds good or something you guys have come across?

I prefer to scatch on the real things but messing
with samplers on a scratchy way is loads of fun.

If you got a PT01 and a Vestax PCV crossfader, with a little work, you can have a portable skratch machine. You'll need to cop a 7" baby skratch seal record though, or have some 7" vinyl dubplates made. There's not enough torque when using 12 inchers. Here's I vid I just recorded:

I used a regular "aaahhh" scratch-sound from a battle record
and used the 404 pitch effect to alter it. Watching it now I'm not
very happy with it - could do much better.

On the other hand jiggity-j's device was cool - and not just a toy
gimmick as he proved some serious scratching could be done. I'd
love a system like that I could carry on a backpack.

do you have an adjustable fadercurve on there?
are you cutting the main signal; i mean is it possible to play a beat via line in and still fading the record without fading the line in?
..so would this work without any pa and just the unit itself ( via built in speaker?


did you add any extras? i could imagine a ttm56-style killswitch for transformers (applied to the line in)

Thanks man. I followed this tutorial made for the Handytrax: http://youtu.be/lGBto2yG4l4. After wiring the crossfader like in the tutorial, just splice the crossfader wires into the wires that go into the volume control.

There is no adjustable curve and the cut-in is a little longer than usual, with a slight fade. The guy that made the tutorial told me to put a little hot glue on the crossfader walls, just enough so the sound is cut. Same theory as the Vestax cut spacers. It cuts great but not like an innofader.

There's X-Mini speaker in it and has an extra 3.5mm input/output. You can plug something in it to play a beat, but it attenuates a little. I am no electrician and I'm sure there's tons of ways to make it better.

Wow, some cool techniques in this thread. I don't have a turntable, so I'll probably go with the pitch effect and resample little snippits of pieces of scratching sounding stuff and finger drum out the scratching.

Also, there's several apps for iOS that you can use to scratch samples. I've an iPod and it's really too small to use but I imagine iPad isn't so bad. You'll just miss the tactile feedback of actual physical gear.
