if u did a project w an mc using vhs....

For those that use vhs tape in their production...if u were doing something w an mc,would u have him just spit through a normal chain over beats that were already bounced to vhs...or bounce the whole mix,vocals and beat (pre vhs) to tape after recording? Just curious to see what some people think would sound dopest...thanks

I use cassettes, not vhs, and I never work with Mc's but if I did, I would have the whole track, vocals and all on tape, otherwise it probably wouldn't be consistent. Gotta get it all on tape so it sounds the same.

i don't see why that would matter. better to just have the beat on tape and be done with it. move on to the next thing. the vox might sound a little better on tape but the difference is probably negligible. is the beat dope? is the mc spitting raw sh*t? that's what's important.

Really don't think it would be as negligible as you might think-- the smallest adjustment in a vocal, like a little eq or efx tweak can change the sound of a vocal dramatically. I would think ( could be wrong though) having a vocal on an old vhs tape as opposed to pristine digital cd quality would make a noticable difference. Which would sound better w the project I'm working on,and the sound I'm going after w it,I'm not sure,don't have a vhs & tapes yet to experiment..thought i'd try to get a few opinions before I go get them next week. I've seen that in the early-mid nineties or so vhs was considered the "poor man's dat". In that context I guess it would make sense to bounce it all to tape. Then again it might be an interesting mix w a "clean" vocal and a heavilly saturated beat.

Have the beat on tape. Roll that through the emcee's headphones while they spit their lyrics, recorded to seperate tape (or whatever other media you choose).
Now you got 2 tracks - instrumental & vocal, mix these together and you got a master.

That's an interesting idea...haven't even thought about running line out from the preamp to a vcr. Would this affect the sound differently than just recording normally,and then bouncing the whole mix to tape? I guess it would,since that would double up.on the tape sound and saturation when you lay them down together in a mix right? Thanks
