Hey fam, how about telling me what you think about this sound quality of this recording? Been messing around with my setup & not 100% with how everything's running into the next thing. Need some impartial ears to pass judgement on it.

Cheers!

Depends on what sound you want...
Smart?
Sounds a little "thin" to me.

Sweet! Constructive criticism!

This is good, fellas! OK so when you say it sounds thin is that across the whole mix or because of that upfront drone that plays through the first half?

To be honest I actually like cold & digital sound. Hence why I didn't heat it up before sharing. But this isn't about my opinions, this is about making my shit sound better to folk like you three, so thanks for taking the time.

No probs, but where did you pick the error & what was it? Help me to fix it mate!! There was one bit where I didn't cut off the high drone in time for a transition at 0:34.79 to 0:35.5, is that it? Checked the link too, not too sure how that relates...

OK so I just microwaved this: Centripental not Centriphugal

Different gear used this time (SP-606 sampling SH-32), same recording sequence & gear (tweaked settings), added EQ at the final recording stage & multitrack recorded it. Does this one sound cold to you?

The sound is clean and crisp. It has a "balanced" quality.
What was the type of sound you are trying to achieve? Does it sound good to you? I think one's self is their biggest critic, and if you can satisfy your own ears than you've achieved success.

For me, I like raw, gritty click-poppin' crackle. Cheap, lo-fi recording done "in the red" from an analog source.

Your description says your using an OP-1. Them things are neat, compact and can do alot of tasks and got some cool effects. For an end result, they put out a quality sound. I just personally don't like the "digi" characteristic and prefer a more crunchy, static dubbed to tape.

This sounds great UNfolding.. I wish I could get a clean sound like this. My set up is still not the best.

The quality is nice, but it seems like there's no mid frequencies.

Ha! Mate the slime-tone's half the appeal with your tunes, they sound dank & old which is almost impossible to do get with a clean mix.

True story, I did scoop the hell out of the EQ in the OP-1 when recording it.

Yeah, all good points you raise there. To be honest I'm totally confident at getting a technically 'good' sound but that sound's not what SP fam prefer to listen to, as you said yourself. I want to make music that people want to listen to, which is why I'm asking about what other's tastes are.

Going against my own preference here (clean, cold & balanced) may be construed as being fake but it's not, I like production values that fit the music. Fidelity comes 2nd to songwriting, so if I can challenge myself & make a beat that's better suited to lo-fi than hi-fi- that's a win. Plus being able to nail a bunch of techniques & production methods shows true skill, right? Nobody wants to be a one-trick wonder.

Which makes shit hard right here because I don't have any analogue recording methods! OK, off to ebay to check out some tape decks...

Really appreciating all these responses by the way.
