Big Ableton fan. Been using it for about 4/5 years now. I love how tactile it is. I can use it to make beats or record multitrack audio. I must admit tho, I've never used any of its in built instruments apart from sampler and drum rack. Drum rack is immense for beats. I get all my instruments from vst4free.com

I also use Reaper. More of a conventional DAW, but it auto cross fades audio so it makes edits so easy. Been using it for making beats recently too. Quite cool.

I use Cubase at work. Used it for years too. It's pretty neat too, but again more a conventional DAW.

Fl studio seams to have had a resurgence. That was one of the first pieces of software I used back when it was FL Studio. Haven't used it for years but I know a lot of people use it.

All I would say is get demos and give them all a go. See what works for you

I've been using ableton since it was at version 1.5, so I guess about 12 years? I've used them all, and I must say that ableton is the best. There are a bunch of bedwetting pricks over at forums.ableton.com who are always whining that ableton doesn't do this or doesn't do that....good grief!
Anyhow, I love ableton, but I recently came to an epiphone....I HATE computers! I've been making music on computers for years and years, and I am sick to fuckin death of staring at a screen! I've been relying too much on what my eyes see, rather than what my ears hear....I've been missing the physical interaction of turning the knobs and beating pads (midi controllers just don't count...hardware!). So, I bought a sp404sx and my Mac system running ableton sits and is all frumpy and sulky....ha.
I now use the SP and an iPad (which is a computer, but it doesn't act like one).
Beware DAWs dude. Yeah, version 9 will do anything and everything, but I'll take my sp and resampling...all the little quirks....all the workarounds....all the FUN any day!
I am finding that I have a much better connection to the tunes I'm making on my SP.

Yeah Ive been wondering what to use myself.I wanted something to basically, I guess, pre master all samples before resmpling/live playing it out. I remember using fruity loops years ago and I didn't really enjoy not having something more hands on. Downloaded a demo of ableton, read the manual and still cant get my head around it.At the moment I either record to tascam 424 as live,record whole thing back into the sp,add eq/reverb,resample and export wav file or just record live/resampled playing straight into reaper adding the stereo width effect and a little reverb. I 'm never really happy with how the finished tracks sound though. I'm thinking my best bet would be to record each track separately into reaper rather than resampling but that kinda loses the spontaneity of resampling.
I guess something where I could have loops and just move them around into place, layering, dropping etc would be good but I dunno.

Used Ableton for ages and it's def my favourite DAW. I was in the same situation as you till I dug out my 303.

I'd say +1 for reason and u get record also very low on CPU usage tons of free refills out there! And tons of ways to manipulate sound and its also for the novice user. You can play almost as soon as you install. Ableton is a very nice software but I just can't leave flstudio reason and cubase alone I swear by these three. Need an sp somewhere in the mix of all this hehe! But definitely look at fl studio or reason. Lifetime updates for fl studio and reason has a ton of sounds to get you started. There's also tons of awesome free vsts out there. Ppl can talk abt how much they spend on vsts but until u have went digging for free vsts and tried them all out u honestly will not need to buy any for a while kairatune is my fave free vst right now. Vst4free.com best place for free vsts. There's some awesome stuff up there. I think Ableton let's itself down with its instruments, but who cares when there's tons of free stuff out there!

Just started digging into reaper and it's pretty amazing, especially for $60. The way you can record multiple takes is amazing with the SP, just track into reaper, export each layer back into SP for mixing and stuff. 10/10 would recommend.

Am a big fan of Reaper. I mainly use it for audio edits and stuff at work. The auto crossfade is awesome! Great DAW for newbies to get started on too

was just reading this little guitar center catalog and there is a feature on RZA. he recommended, without any hesitation, a mobile setup consisting solely of NI maschine and ableton live (or logic/pro tools) + macbook.
(there was also a photo of him messing around with beat thang...)

Hey sup everyone? I just wanted your guys opinions on which production software yall favor. Right now I am looking into Ableton. I just thought i would check in and see what the sp heads had to say, thanks.

First time I use FL studio (Trial version) but I think that it too expensive for me including in big file for my computer. Now I use Dubturbo for make beat but for music I give FL Studio is best.
