Peace not here to spread any negativity but I feel the topic of this and I see how it transitioned into something I hoped to address anyway
Since when did it become okay to sample other producers drums? That's ALWAYS been a no no cats these days don't even realize it and its because those who do don't say anything, and because there's no accountibility cats wanna make up mad excuses and act like no one is going to care
Its crazy how its all about the easy way out for people now. Its no easy way out learning how to play an instrument. You can't download the knowledge on how to get real nice on the sax and people jacking parts of beats and getting props for it is going to take credibility away from the idea of beat makers being musicians in the eyes of non beat makers. You want a super dope drum kit/break put in that work digging for breaks, learning how to chop them just right an learning how to sequence them so they sound how you want.
I remember this young cat who's getting a lot of props was showing my boy how he jacked his whole drums from a Damu joint. I wondered if this kid had seen the video on Damu discussing his drums and how the sound is a huge point of pride and has taken him a long time to decelop. If I was Damu id punch somebody in the face for takin my joints, and that's why I'm reluctant to leave any open drums on my joints. I

Another thing more directly related to the origional post, where I live I started hearing work of a. Young local cat id never heard of, seen. At any record spots or events and how out of nowhere he's the sickest beat maker so an so heard. Even dope emcees in the area started fucking exclusivly with this dude. So I check out his page
20+ joints and every single one has nothing but samples from 90s gems that a lot of these other people were unfamiliar with. I'm talkin about from straight looped breaks up. Everything sounded like it had a banging mix an mastering job done before pieced together. Turns out the kid just fucks around with piecing together download packs and didn't even know a lot of the joints the samples had been used in, how to work a sampler, anything about creating music and even not much about the genera he was producing. Its terrible to see! But this shits gonna be pointed out to people like yo, you're goin the wrong direction my dude

On a side note tho, it would be kiiiiinda comical to see someone get sued by the owner of the origional not even knowing the origin of the sample they used haha

I've never had anything stolen from me music-wise, but I have run across when my music was used in a mix and I found out about it later. However, the full track listing was provided so it was cool by me. :) It's always cool to run into your track and I think I'd still be happy if someone claimed they were me. Means I was doing something right if people want to rip me off. Of course, I'm sure that feeling wouldn't last forever...lol

With the advent of drum Romplers (such as Addictive Drums which is what I use now and then), you can make your own drum break sound exactly how you want. It's cool stuff and for you guys that have access to computer software (or rather don't mind dealing with the bullshit of software) should look into it. With a little bit of patience, you can create your own unique original break and still have it sound like you lifted it off some obscure record. No one would be the wiser. :)

Here's 2 breaks I created in this manner. It's same rhythm/playing/MIDI but gave it two different flavors.
http://bureiksu.net/misc/addictive_drum ... p_test.wav
http://bureiksu.net/misc/addictive_drum ... _test2.wav

These are 3 more I made of varying styles...you get the idea.
http://bureiksu.net/misc/addictive_drum ... _test3.wav
http://bureiksu.net/misc/addictive_drum ... _test4.wav
http://bureiksu.net/misc/addictive_drum ... _test5.wav

You can either put in the work looking for that ultra rare break or make your own. Depends on what you're trying to achieve or what you enjoy, really. There's several drum romplers for PC with lots of samples (addictive drums has like...2Gigs of drum audio with tons of different samples for different velocities of strikes on the pieces of the 5 different brands of kits). Once you throw on some dirt, the rest is history. :) Not sure if this is 'cheating' to the real diggers, but in the end, it's the final track that matters, at least to me.

its different if you're stealing hip-hop drums from the 80s or another era. there's no rules--didn't madlib do that on greenery? if you're doing your own drums in addition i don't see the problem once in a while--its all part of the continuum... ski straight up jacked drums off a tribe record for jay-z dead presidents, there's a youtube video (maybe a maschine ad?) where he explains it.
where do you draw the line? can you sample drums off a r&b record from 1989? where and when does r&b/rock become hip-hop? jack anything as long as you make it original and dope. thought this thread was about jacking whole beats and calling it yours

Hseiken-- wow man that shit is dope, lol, completely sounds like some genuine 60s/70s breaks I was surprised how official they sound. I never fuck w software but would definitely have to look into it if I could make my own breaks like this. Is there any way u could go a little into depth about the process involved, like are the drums processed w pre sets/ plug ins? Is it extremely tedious and time consuming? Maybe I'm behind the times but I've really never heard any breaks this real sounding created by anything but a live drummer..and even the majority of that shit sounds kinda sack. I'm really interested in the process, thanks

Yea no doubt..still waiting for hseiken to reply here,lol..I'm just curious, furthest I've ever gone w software is a few plug ins in reaper for finished beats. But yea man damn those breaks sound crazy,u can't really acheive reverb like that w a hardware sampler, and whatever else he did to that shit.

Thanks, man! The process isn't too involved once you do initial setup of your 'sweet spot'. Basically, in your drum program, you're going to have to adjust the drum mic simulators to mimic how older records were done, which was usually one room mic and a mic near the snare/hats. Then you adjust the stereo on them to your liking along with reverb. A lot of reverb in those days was spring reverb boxes so if you can find an effect like that, it will add the best 'legit' verb on it. Next you adjust the drum sounds how you want along with EQ. If you listen to a lot of records from like 60's, early 70's, the kick wasn't especially deep and the snare was real 'slappy'. So you adjust in your drum program to get that sound both with drum controls (i.e. tightening the head and rattlers and such) and EQ on entire mix. They weren't banging those sub bass frequencies back then! Finally for the finishing touch, get a tape saturation effect and kick it up a notch then throw on a vinyl sim and you got your own personal drum break.

Initially, you have to play around quite a bit with the sounds and such but once you find that sweet spot, to get different style breaks sounds, it's just a couple little adjustments here and there. I use addictive drums inside of Orion Platinum and use Orion's built in saturation and lofi effects along with their EQ and Impulse Response Reverb (which is a chameleon reverb...if you have a click with a reverb trail, it can imitate that reverb on anything).

Those 5 breaks were done in an afternoon. The first one took about 2-3 hours to get right, the next ones didn't take long at all and I have an Orion project saved with all my tweaks so I can just go in and get what I want, but I still prefer real breaks. Just wanted to show the option was there for those so inclined or want a specific sound they can't seem to find from old wax.

Peace!

to crack your snares more maybe a little bit crush or radio fx to tape can help make them crunchyer , mic'd drums from the 60s / 70s , try fuckin with 1 kHz more saturation less compression and less reverb, ill post examples to what i'm talking about, but blavatsky was coming pretty close in the break loops he recorded and posted in the library.

here is one mic'd snare I know of for quick example.

Digital technology has allowed everyone access to the artists world but not everyone is creative and deserving of directing human thought, which I believe is the purpose of great art. We owe it to each other to not let good art get drowned out in a sea of grey. Stealing only robs an individual of their own joy of discovery and wonder and that person will suffer accordingly.
