The Resample Method

Hi, ok so ive had a 404 for a while now and ive got a really good workflow down. the thing is i always hear people going on about the resample method of building beats.... i just dont get it!

how do you do this without a metronome?

also im right in saying that you cant resample a sequence to a pad arent i?

i tried to find a thread that explained this but no luck... maybe im a retard. cheers

make "your own" metronome....
sometoìimes could be a loop of hihats or other things.
then resample adding kick, snare etc

no, just resample you playing a short loop of hihats, this create your "virtual" metronome....

You play a like 1 or 2 bars of hihats. and loop it. If youve been making music a while or just have a natural sense of timing it should be no problem. People makes beats this way because its faster than using the sequencer and it lets you swing your drums by playing everything live.
Try it out, hit resample and start playing hihats. loop em. now resample again and start adding things in like kicks or snares

Think of rhythm vs lead guitar. The former plays the same chords over and over; this can be your loop. Let it play for however long as you jam on top with another sample or two. Just remember u are limited to like four voices on the 404.

the re-sample method of creating a "beat" is pretty simple. more often than not you are simply creating a loop, usually two to four bars. A good way to start is to
1. record a sample
2. copy and paste or resample that loop to pads 1 through 8
3. use the mark button to chop the loop into 8 quarter note sections

to do this you simply count one and two and three and four and etc.

On pad one press the mark button on the one and then the two.
On pad two press the mark button on the two and the three.
On pad three press the mark button on the three and the four.

Do this until you have 8 "chops".

4. Now you should assign a kick to pad 10
a snare to pad 11
a hi-hat to pad 12



After doing all of this try to play a beat with your hands. You could play the drums with you left hand while playing the chops with your right.

You can use the remain button to assign an effect to all of your chops

Mess around with this for a while.

5. make sure that all of your pads are mono, not stereo.

you are all set up now to "play" a beat.

once you have figured out something that you like simply use the re-sample button to play a beat into pad 9.

as far as resample goes, does anyone use a korg kp3 to make resampled beats? i am just curious if anyone can flip something on a kp3. been interested in those for some time now but never taken the leap to see what all it can do. from reading the manual it looks like it could be a dope stand alone sampler.

i do use a metronome sometimes, but honestly learning to be a DJ back when ppl used vinyl you get a pretty solid sense of timing

yes you can do some flip on the kp3.
there is resample mode and a sort of chop too.
i have one, you can do limited things with in this case, but it's funny.

yeah its not really enough for standalone, but its great in combo with an SP or something

think of it more as a looper with fx than a sampler.. u cant really play the pads like a beat or anything, theyre not responsive enough
