who makes they're own drum sounds?

just finished 24 beats using self made kicks (mic tapp distortion) then eq'd

combo claps / snaps / doubled up shaker n tambourine + metal spoon slapped together ( a treat).

.. was considerring buying a single snare .. got the kicks on lock .. despite the occasional pop .. kick heavy beats (can be compressed later or pre production i guess)

anybody else tired of using the same drum breaks / 1 shots that every other beatmaker has used atleast 1nce or 2wice before?

Not tired of using the same drums as others ripped from brakes. I got ways to make 'em sound new... Heaps interested in making my own drums though. Got a little kids drum kit & a nice basic Rode condensor mic. Both are seriously under used.

How long did it take you to make the packs? How was it mic'ing up the room? Did you find it easy editing & managing the sample packs?

Honestly the management aspect of the samples (making files of sounds, editing the takes down etc) is something that could get tedious quick.

Counter debate for the sake of it: why should anyone in our field care about reusing the same drum sound? Drummers in any/every other kind of music reuse the same kit for whole albums (even careers) & nobody complains about that. Maybe we need to get over drum sounds & start to focus on drum techniques.

Wow, I've never realized that before. And I totally agree with you on that.

Besides that, I always sample and create drums from breaks like (probably) the most of us do.. I'd like to give it a shot though, making own drums from scratch. It definatly will add up to our creativity.

I've been splicing my own drum sounds recently. Taking the attack from one kick and splicing it with the release of another. You can get some different and nice sounding samples of your own that way.

But yeah, who cares about what sounds you using. Been listening to Eric Lau over the past few days and all his drum samples have been used everywhere! But his programming is what makes it!

I already have a massive drum sample collection that I've built up over 10 years, which is way out control! Sometimes its cool to keep it simple with the drum collection and concentrate on the feel of the rhythm. I generally change out samples anyway after I make my loops.

not long cos i was using a different set of 6-12sounds per 8 beats .. then deleting and creating the fresh sounds to avoid using the exact same one too much

.. just some quick eq'n .. maybe adding a few effects upon use in a beat .. pretty quick tbh .. plus i mainly leave my pads on the [GATE] to get different note length variation .. nothing complicated

..don't archive drums anymore .. just make the sounds when i want em .. also i've given up on hi hats for the minute .. kick n snare action .. cos i'm a chop man

I usually make new drum kits got each beat, but that's what I like to do. I'll use a sound again if I really like it tho

I make almost all of my drums from sounds I get from a field recorder. I never really archive them either. It's a hell of an idea though. I love making my own drums, but honestly a kick is a kick a snare is a snare... If you want it to be. Just make it sound good.
