yo they got a used sp606 in good condition at guitar center for $200. should i get it? right now besides an og 404 i only have a turntable, garageband & a casio tone keyboard from the 80s. i've wanted another sp for a while now but was also considering a mini koass pad 1 or 2. should i get the 606 or mini kp? i do raw sample based hip-hop btw

If you wanted another sp anyway, why not go for it? If you end up not wanting it, put it on eBay with a buy it now of 200, and you'll prolly get your cash back fairly quick.

Buy the shit out of it!

If you do get it, welcome to the 606 club, dude! The 606 is totally different to the 404 in terms of workflow. Buy it & you'll have:
- 16 pads
- Screen for wave & sequencer editing
- 2x FX + mastering FX
- 4 track sequencer
- Tracker style 96ppq sequence edit
- Mute groups
- Velocity
- Soundcard via USB... Even goes to 64bit thanks to Korakios & Ellaguru.

^The 606 can get much deeper than the 404 (sorry 404 dudes, but that's the truth). The 606 got slept on hard, it's basically the precursor to the NI Maschine but standalone.

No reason why they won't work together nicely. Here's an idea for working them together:
- use the 606 as a midi master with the 404
- build a sequence in the 404
- use the 606's external sequencer sample to grab the whole loop in the right tempo
- Chop the loop on the 606, use some of its exclusive FX (feedback ripper FTW)
- Export the 606's chops via the memory card/USB, transfer back to the 404
- Profit

thanks unfolding--i was scouring the 606 section last night for posts similar to mine. there was another guy who had a 303 & 404 and was considering a 606 among other things and someone advised against the 606 because they said the 404 did a lot of the 606 functions. i'm a wax dude and don't really care about synths, but i'm looking forward to the better sequencer and mute groups. your post certainly sealed it for me and $200 is a mega steal!

No probs! Yeah the 606 does have a bonus synth that is actually pretty decent when you dig into it (use it for resampling to pads, good for fleshing out samples), but not using it won't take away from what you can acheive with the 606.

Yeah there'll always be those who advise against any bit of gear just as much as there's those who talk up the same thing. I've messed around on a mate's 404 (An Owl, where are you duder?!) & can say by first hand experience the 2 are very different machines. Should say I'm biased because the 606 was my first sampler.

got it! walking out of the store not felt that giddy since i copped my first sampler (sp-303) 10 circa '03. doesn't seem like there's any good tutorials on youtube--sample kings tutorial previews were awful. guess i'm just gonna be reading the manual for the next day or two. it's definitely a jump going from the 3-digit clock radio read out to the mpc-style screen
