Lofi Drums, sample selection or processing? both?

Greetings Sp-forums.
I am seeking information pertaining to the production of raw and lofi drums.
Here are some examples of the sort of drums I'm referring to:

From what I gather the sound relies heavily on a sort of tape compression, reverb, and other forms of distortion. I've even heard of people bouncing to VHS or tape and back to capture that warmth.
Does anyone have any experiences, tips, or tutorials they could share?
Am I over thinking this all and the sound mostly comes from sample selection?

I just push the "lofi" button. Usually more than once I put lofi on the snares and hats, and then put lofi on the whole track when I'm done. Double lofi. That's all there is to it

Your on the right track with all the things you've mentioned a bit of eq and compression can go a long way, chop up drum breaks also as they sound raw of the bat, because they were recorded through old mics, mixing desks and on to tape, just experiment with layering drum hits mainly snares at slightly different times to thicken sounds, you could later vinyl hiss under your drums and smash em with compression, just try to dirty them up with tape or vsts etc, a good free vst is camel phat

The microwavedmeows stuff is all heavily compressed! Probs using the 404 compressor.

Try and find breaks for vinyl grain etc.

The Dj Krush sample is just a break.

You need to pick a good background sample too, as the microwavedmeows have really nice stuff that they maybe pitch down or summit!?

Also, try using the vinyl sim effect for that flutter etc.

A little bit of bitcrushing will also help. For example, from 16 to 12 bit.

I think most of these kung fu beat cats simply run their beats unprocessed besides heavy compression thru a 202. But there's mad ways to get Lo fi drum sounds ..Roland,ensoniq, emu samplers,digital recorders w Lo fi efx & adjustable bit & sample rates..using a pt 01 or something like it can help add grittiness. Another thing with sp's is the distortion mfx- turn the drive all the way down and put the other knob at 12 o clock..shits dope. I think the key is to find a combo of a couple things to create a distinctive sound. Too many Lo fi heads sound exactly the same imo.

You can get a crunchy/trashy lo-fi sound to your drums by processing pretty easily.
Just using the standard FX built into the SP will give you some grit. And like already said, things like EQ, compression, bit crushing will make your sound grimy.
Adding a graphic equalizer to your setup will give aid to your samples.
You can start at the source by sampling material that was recorded low budget to begin with; distorted garage bands, even some trashy punk bands.
