I got started with FL studio. It was fun, but i just got bored staring at a screen with a million knobs and switches.

i use a cheap ass sequencer called energy XT, it came with my audio interface, i think you can get it online real cheap. Too much on the screen confuses me, this is basic, mega easy to use and, above all, what i'm now used to. With the SP and groovebox this little baby's all i need :-)

I really like ableton. I'm not very good with computer production, but its super user friendly and very powerful especially for production.

Reason right here. Waaay simpler than Ableton (for me anyway). Laid out like your using actual gear, even if it is all rackmount gear. It doesn't use VST stuff so you actually need to learn how to use a synth rather rely on presets, Reason gives you a limited number of devices that are really powerful with the right knowledge.

Gotta be honest that I'm biased against Ableton because I've met too many people who rely on it's plug ins & good sound then make shitty music. Some people can get lost in all the sound processing options it has & forget to make their music listenable.

The answer depends on what you are looking for.

there are three main things that a DAW is good for.

1. recording your music, much like a tape recorder. if this is all you need i would
recommend starting out with audacity because it is free, and probably the most
used software for this function outside of a professional setting so there is
plenty of resources and help available online

2. you may be looking for a sequencer. reason, fl studio, logic, cubase, sonar, ableton, and most other well known DAWs will do the trick.

3. you may want software for drum machines and synths. i don't understand why
you would really need software for chopping and editing samples because you
already have a badass sp series sampler, but mabey you want auto-chop and
visual editing capabilities, in which case i would recommend recylce

4. you might want synth sounds and drum machines. i would highly recommend
reason. it is modeled after hardware and is a good way to learn how to use and
route hardware. this is great especially if you plan on saving up money and
buying some physical synths, effects, drum machines etc further down the road.

i would recommend reason to someone who comes from a hardware background, especially since reason 6 can now record audio. also, the kong drum designer module is awesome.

I can honestly feel you there, but I've also heard a lot of good come out it. Over production works for some people. Personally I like the feel and sounds of hardware samplers. When I do use it, I mainly use it for the clips and scenes. They're super fun to play with. Honestly though I could just use audacity to do what I really want to do with computers. If you're looking to do computer production though, I'd suggest ableton to anyone.

On a side note though.... I do think Ableton 9's new midi functions (turning melodies and drums into midi instantly) are going to lead to lead to some pretty lazy "musicians" pumping out the same shit over and over. I'm pretty torn on that.
