I started with Hip-Hop and listened to mostly Native Tongue/Rap-a-lot until my friend got me a record by Melt-Banana around 1995 and opened me up to other kinds of music. Death metal is my second-favorite genre, but I'm very picky about it.

My favorite non-rap stuff: Ween, Zappa, Neurosis (pre-2002), Soilent Green, Morbid Angel (pre-"Heretic"), Red Krayola, Zeni Geva, Carcass, Sonic Youth, Napalm Death, Yona-Kit, anything on Skingraft records or that Jim O Rourke played on in the 90's, early Anticon (got me back into hip-hop)...

I had no idea so many people are into death metal and thrash. I actually just saw napalm death about a month ago. That's cool how open minded everybody is

I play guitar and love jazz and blues, particularly Otis Rush type blues and Joe Pass jazz (plus a load of other shit). Danny Gatton has a live album from 78 that blows my mind. I also love Gypsy Jazz music (Rosenberg Trio, ftw).

Recent stuff...really love Tame Impala and this project involving the lead singer of Tame Impala (he was the producer) called Melody's Echo Chamber (sounds like Portishead/Broadcast meets tame impala). Alabama Shakes kick all kinds of ass as well.

Kinda offtopic but speaking of Portishead, anyone got any leads on similar dark/slow/gloomy/heavy/doomy trip hop? Stuff that sounds kinda like this beat here:

As for me:
Metal/hard core: poison the well, every time I die, boysetsfire, dimmu borgir, decapitated, 36 crazyfists, nine inch nails, million dead

Indie/alternative: the smiths, the cure, everything everything, zappa, frank turner, jose gonzalez

Electronica: underworld, aphex twin, squarepusher, lots of house/techno/dubstep/dnb

Bit of funk/soul here any there, god it's hard to think of your whole music taste, this list is definately not definitive!

I was a teenager during that first wave of early 80s hardcore(ya,I'm old). So I have a twisted soft spot for flipper, angry samoans, black flag, dead Kennedys and the rest. I was lucky enough to see most of them play. Shows were only a couple of bucks way back when. Listen to a lot of jazz and classical and I'm force fed a healthy dose of kids music, which ain't as crappy as when I was a kid.

Two other very occasionally active solo projects of mine:
Ainslie Apocalypse <- sludgey mid tempo grindcore made with drum machines & samplers. I also played bass on this.
Can't See Round Corners <- noise collage stuff mostly made through sampling TV & in real time.

I've been getting a boner for middle eastern psyche. Turkish & Iranian (pre-revolution) stuff mainly, but there's amazing music from anywhere in the region. Derdiyoklar are my current favourites:
Yaz Gazeteci (Baris K Edit)
sorry I don't know the name of this one
Fun fact: THEY PLAY A FUCKING 3 NECKED ELECTRIC SAAZ!
Weapons: SP-606, 404SX, 404mk2
Soundcloud - Bandcamp 1 - Bandcamp 2

Also, any leads on more stuff like this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJvl-zoNZvU

bass heavy, gloomy, kinda hip hop/kinda dubstep preferably with vintage synth sounds, I hate dubstep with all those Tranformer voice-overs :(

I am posting this here because, as with the Portishead-like doomy trip hop request, this kind of stuff is really new to me and belongs to the "other musical interests". I'm a post-hardcore child :P
