good ways of adding bass to your sp beats?

yeah subsonic kicks is what im usually doing but i have a midi keyboard and would like to add some bass in reason, just whenever I've tried it before it sounds really bad. I'll probably just stack up a bunch of basses in ableton and see how that goes

as far as deep frequencies is concerned, using high quality source material is a big deal (e.g. wav not mp3).

as far as kicks, layering might be your best bet. take one kick with a really sharp attack and one that's airy and boomy, EQ em, etc, throw em together and i guess do that til you have a full sounding kick.

doing corrective surgery EQing on shitty samples will only get you so far.

try layering it with other things if need be, like synth tones or reverb explosions or the sound of storms recorded from very far away with shabby mics. whatever it takes. the solution(s) may lie within the gear, but might also lie without it.

If you shell out a couple of bucks for a handheld kaossilator, they compliment the SP's quite well. Especially in the bass department.

also, i mean you could just hone the EQ in ableton.

could do a spectral analysis of one of yr fave kick sounds, see what freq's are pumpin.

you could throw a multiband compressor on kicks, pull up the GUD!

I like to make beats in resample mode and clear all the pads except for the one with the full beat. Then, I have a separate keyboard that I jam along to the beat with and figure out what bass notes go great with the song. Then I sample each bass note onto each pad and then resample the whole beat while playing the basslines with the pads (each set at "gate" and sampled as "mono" as to not mess up the polyphony). I love the microkorg, because you can tune it globally (in case your samples are slightly off a normal tuning).

If you have the kaossilator, you can select a bass and just holding your finger in a corner (so it is consistent) and change the key to get different diatonic notes.

I also use the sub bass effect with 50% wetness over a sample chop and tune it till it matches the note or key of the sample. Change it to 100% wetness, resample the bass note. Repeat for all sample chops till you build up a good palette.

Finally, you can just get a digital 4-track recorder and play your synths over your beat...dump it via usb, done.
