The studio I used to work in had an old box and a set of those old intercom speakers that hang on the wall in schools. Who ever was mixing would switch between the mackies and those. Sometimes it's better to work on shitty speakers. Makes you work a little harder to get things to sound good-if stuff sounds good on that junk it'll sound pretty good anywhere and mixing at low volumes is always preferable to butt vibrating volume.

and that's why shitty speakers are cool in that case, also 2€ pc speakers.
that's the reason why many studios (also big ones) keep the famous yamaha ns10: they're not sounding real good, but this fact is a paramenter for many different ears.

Low volume mixing is the key...its good to bring it loud to make sure everything sounds good, but lower volume tells less lies. I also do the car test, ipod earbuds, and also just playing it through shitty laptop speakers. Phil Spector knew at the time that most people listened to music through shitty tiny speakers, so he mixed his stuff to maximize the sound through that scenario (and churned out the hits).
