Monotron is way too limited... i have one and its a cool toy and has an ok sound but wouldnt be cool if it was all you had

Sorry Lazer but I'm with Culp on this. Got a Monotron Duo & it can make some intense tones. Even found a few sweet spots where the sound it generates is just nuts. Sure it's no Moog, but with an SP you can manage some decent stuff. The key is to resample the hell out of it. Make sure you've got the VCOs tuned to an actual note before sampling & it's great!

Also got an SH-32, haven't banged on about that one in a while so bare with me here.

Even though its sounds super digital it goes great when you put it in performance mode, up to 4 saved synth modules can be controlled via midi (can store something dumb-huge like 128 patches). Even has a drum synth that can model real sounding TR drum machines!

Sequence the SH-32 with whatever you've got (I use an Analogue Solutions Europa) & and chain with an SP-606 (as the midi clock master). Audio the SH-32 into the SP to sample sequneces. The 606 even handles midi on/off messages when sampling. With that rig I never need to use a DAW. Ever.

I_kil_animals did make some pretty good beats with the monotron + 404 thats why i was interested in getting it.

i was thinking the moog mg1, but holy shit i just watched a video for the ms2000 and it looks incredible!

I wasnt saying its impossible to make the monotron work, it can be done fairly easily. Just saying that the monotron is nothing compared to a proper keyboard synth with multiple patches and shit. The monotron only has a limited number of sounds it can make, which is ok, but a full function synth is way better. And no disrespect to i kil anmls, but the limitations of the monotron are very apparent in that tape, the whole tape has a limited number of sounds... i wasnt a huge fan of it.

the ms2000 is a fucking beats. I had the chance to play with one for a few days like years ago. And that memory always stuck with me. Back in like 1999, before i knew or even thought about beatmaking, a buddy of mine got a ms2000 and a 303. A fucking insane combo.

If you could find a Virus B or C cheap, they are among the best VAs in that price range. Novation nova is no slump too.


MS2000 I don't care for the 4-voice architecture , or filter/oscs as much as other VAs, YMMV

I'd love a monotron that had a regular keyboard (even just 15 keys or so with an octave button) and be polyphonic so you could play chords.

ya, im slowly thinking about getting that midi hook up for the monotribe. Just seems like it would turn that thing into an actual analog synth since ribbon controllers are fucking retarded. Can never get the same key twice and it becomes frustrating.

i recently got my monotribe midified. very good decision! you can use it as a sequencer for other synths as well. the alpha juno hooked up to a midi controller is very dope too. and cheap.

So with the midi hookup being like 70 bucks and a monotribe for like 200 bucks you have a analog mono synth for about 300 bucks which aint bad. And it totally has the crunchy analog sound with a ton of breathing and air. Anything else you notice cool about a midified monotribe, id like to know everything about it since there are hardly any videos on it, just people playing with it.

when i read that, i thought for a moment there must be a better analog mono synth out there for 300 bucks. maybe used? maybe not... i don't know.
what i really like about the monotribe is the sound and the knobs and switches. midified it makes more sense for me cause i'm a keyboarder. but it was already cool without the midi hook up. what i don't like is the clicking sound you hear when you play more deep filtered sounds with it. no real adsr, only 3 different curves to choose from. and all of them click in the beginning or the end but when you play faster stuff or sequences without pauses there is no clicking. and you could sample bass sounds and cut the click. so much for the fucking click sound. damn i hate it!!! and the midi pitchbend range is locked to 1 octave but the monotribe is still dope. i can make a video if you tell me what you want see about the miditribe.

hey spacetrip. there's a lot of good info in here. just a coupla things to add.

the alesis micron and akai miniak are the same keyboard, just repackaged with a few small tweaks (knobs) on the miniak. the miniak is fine - it sounds good, i've had fun with mine, but the screen is ridiculously hard to see unless you are right on top of it. big design flaw. if that's not a prob for you then go for it.

i can plus-1 on the SH-32. i love mine. you can really layer stuff up and it is so hands on. pro'lly pretty cheap now. slept on.

like others have said, you can pretty much use anything (Casio SK-1!) as a synth if you filter or use MFX & resample on it.
