How do you edit samples?

Hello!!!

I'm glad I found this forum of yours. I just recently brought an SP 404SX on sale. I own an MPC 2KXL and Native Instruments Machine. They're good with the Mashine being heavily techical (still figuring it out) but I wanted to try something that's just fun and easy to get into that just sparks your creativity if you know what I mean. I think every studio has that once piece of gear you run to because it's fun to make music with. I kind of feel that way with the SP 404SX so far. My only problem is trying to figure out how to edit the samples. What do you do exactly? I've read the manual but fear I might not be getting the message right.

apparently there's 2 ways to do it?

1. by Pressing the "Mark" button at the right time (I found that hard to do)
and
2. By using the CTRL knobs 1 for start time and knob 2 for end time?

When I try method 2 my 404 screens says --- and then when I start turing the knob it gives me a range from 0-30 and for the end time I get a rang of 0 to -30. Regardless of how I adjust it the sample sounds the same. I also tried to edit different samples but they always seemed to have that range of 0 to 30 or 0 to -30?

Can someone please shine some light on what I might be doing wrong?

Try a combination of the 2. Use the mark button to set start/end point as accuratly ad u can then fine tune with the start/end point edit.

when you hit the start/end button and turn the knobs it can only go to -30/30. but you can continue editing if you hit the button again so the light goes off, turn the knob back the opposite way and restart the process..

You can only edit start/end points in increments of 30 at one time. but you can always edit more by turning the knob back the opposite way out of editing mode and trying again

Thanks, I see I'm going to have to play around with this somemore to get the hang of it. I'm used to the editing features on my 2000XL so I'm a bit spoiled. I'm just trying to get antiquated with a drum machine/sampler that "fun" to play. I like how it's simpler to make samples and lay them out so far. Back in the olden days I had a DR. 202 and then a Boss DR. 770. Then I jumped to the MPC but I dunno ... I like it but it you know... it feels like "work" sometimes instead of just having fun with the pads. I also brought a Maschine which is a S-load more technical than it looks.

In all my years of playing with pads there's one thing I always realized the MPC and the SP guys are like red and black ant's. They've both been around forever and everyone sticks to their side. I've never seen someone with a 606 or an 808 and an MPC, or heard an MPC head talk about an SP or vice versa. I'm sure it's all different now with the Internets but you know what I mean. It was usually either or. Now I can understand why.

I always like the idea of drumming beats on the pad and just RECing the results. With stuff like the MPC it's studio gear and not really live gear like the SP stuff is.
