MF Doom - MM..Food
Madvillain - Madvillainy
The Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia
Moka Only - Airport 6
Boogalu - Alert
The Dopplegangaz - Lone Sharks

I hope you guys check these albums out if you haven't heard any of them already. Really dope stuff. :)

P.s The Dopplegangaz "Lone Sharks" has been on serious rotation for me since last year when it came out lol

Hold up a sec. Correct me if I'm wrong but a/an:
-beat tape is a compilation of beats (in the broad sense of being a part of hip hop culture) laid out similar to a DJ's mix & provided to fans as a thank you.
-EP is a short collection of tracks put out as a halfway between an album & a single.
-album is a long collection of music representing a purpose for the artist/composer/band (as in a group of songs written over a stretch of time or a group of songs representing a specific meaning).

Side note: clearly the word 'tape' in beat tape is irrelevent when referring to medium. Its like calling an album a 'record' even if its available as a CD or digital download.

Therefore music like those Madlib sets (Madvillain, Medicine Show, YNQ, Beat Konducta, Jaylib, Quas etc) are albums because of the commercial intent & wholistic representation. Sorry Ella, but Husker Du & Zen Arcade isn't a beat tape because they're punk/US hardcore (excellent recommendation though, especially with the DIY parallel between punk & hip hop, gut instinct & totally honest/raw performance).

Haven't heard Cassette yet, but Jonwayne's a good example of someone putting out beat tapes because he posts them for free to anyone who's interested. There's no intent other than 'here's something I made, take it if you want it'.

Does that more-or-less sum up what constitutes a beat tape? This is all just opinion so tell me where you think any of that is right or wrong.

Much of the rest of that I'm not familiar with... So, Sadfac3/Acities are you asking for recommendations of self released hip hop or are you asking for recommendations of simply great music?

@ Unfolding Machines
Thnks for pointing this. Husker Du were great. It makes no difference for me if it's a tape or not, the concept is that they put great music in form of albums (or tapes) etc and that's what i listen at the moment with madlib. lately i listened to a tape of betoween (i have a cassette of music by him) but maybe i'm too OT.
