and i never understood that wonky term to describe beats.

personally i don't know what that english therm means.
what i know is that i began to listen to some of those sounds because of an article by Sasha Frere Jones (of the cool 90s postrock band called UI) talking about "lazer bass beats", in particular about a TRACK (Ghislain Poirier feat Face-T - No More Blood - Megasoid remix). Megasoid killed that beat. it was about 2007 or 2008 i think...the article...
ps
i got my first myspace from 2008 (a sort of electro indie lofi pop, this is not the one on the avatar) and when i asked friendship to Dam Funk (stone throw rec), he accepted that but he wrote me "damn, you guys now you have all those laser bleep sounds, i hear it eveywhere, try to be original" or something like that...(the irony of it all is that at the time i wasn't at all a fan of those sounds...it was just a track influenced by Boards of Canada :)...)

questions for Dibiase since he was there:

When did the 404 become a major player in the la beat scene?

Who put everyone on the 404?

im not gonna say i put everyone on the 404 in the l.a. scene. but i was one of the first in the scene to breakaway from the 303. flylo had the 303 reason i got the 303 after using it his crib the wah wah effects got me hooked cause i was strictly a mpc head til 05. at sketckbook i would see kutmah using a 303 sometimes for sets. even low end theory days gas lamp would use a 303 sometimes. flylo was using ableton shows ,but the first time i saw him he was using a roland sp 606 around 05 at sketchbook .samiyam wasn't living in l.a. yet ,and he was diehard 303 til it finally died on him around 09 then he got the 404. ras g was on the mpc and 303 ,and actually used my 303 for his first europe tour. so he could have at least 30 mins. with 2 sp 303's . plus i had got the 404 from someone that traded me for a beat and 50 dollars in 08.lol and i was tellin em them u can fit hours in one 404 plus more effects. and alot of cats who r titled the face of l.a. beat scene either wasn't living in l.a. or making beats at the moment or old enough to go to any of the shows. I'm sure plenty of kids had a 404 but i didnt see none of them bringin it to low end theory or sketchbook or project blowed as an example of reference. lol

Can you tell me a few beats of yours to check out that you used strictly the 404 and nothing else?

theres something about messing with 8 bit chops that just have this playful appeal. almost as if youre playing a video game while making a beat. :D

yeah i agree alot of ppl was samplin that in the 90's . i attempted to in 95 with a 8 second sampler, but it wasn't all chopped up. but i heard some cats at goodlife / project blowed doing it not whole projects or anything. but thats tough the pinpoint the orgin of 8 bit flips.

thats a tough one there. im not sure who made a whole project based on 8 bit flips. but i would hear 8 bit flips every once in awhile. if only these interviews i did stop asking the same questions. they would find out alot of truth .lol
