My boy saw a 404 at my house and jokingly said "do you make fake dilla beats?"

Hes a hip hop fan not a producer or anything. but we went on to have a discussion about the use of off kilter, dilla style drums, video game samples, lo-fi, glitchy effects, one shots, synths within the whole style.

I love the style but him not only knowing about it, but being "tired of it" almost makes me wish i was around when it first started emerging instead of making a style that apparently is known more than i thought.

I remember reading an interview with Shlohmo where he says something like "why would you want to make something thats already been done already"

with that said do you get tired of tracks like this? are things like DJFX looper becoming cliche? do you look at it as a trend that will die out? or as a style thatll always be around? or will people look back and be like "remember when everyone made those glitchy fake dilla beats?"

I would say these techniques have been around but yeah definitely become more commonly utilized. To me just knowledge spreading and people becoming more aware and adding these techniques to their arsenal. beat making game evolving. I say here to stay. I think more people make "regular" hip hop beats than "fake dilla beats".

sounds like hes referencing "wonky"/LA beat scene stuff that dilla influenced,
moreso than flat out imitation dilla beats.

don't think it sounds like trap either, but just like dilla beats is labeled on just the fact that drums being loose and unquantized. trap beats is label off of 32 triplet hihats and tr 808 kits. so we should say ppl are influence by juicy j or 3-6 mafia. seems like that the formula for electronic music now. either have some tr 808 kits with ambient sounds or brass hits for more of an anthem type banger or throw some arpeggios on top of that sequence.

i hear more fake juicy j beats (3 - 6 mafia) incase u didnt know who that was. lol or influenced by him i should say some of it is tasteful when done right ,and is hype at a party, but alot of it sound the same.

also regardin l.a. beat scene have any of u on this forum been around it the scene during 90's or just going off what u google on youtube? west coast was always naturally funky with basslines and drums long b4 2004 dilla era. even tho dilla was gettin major work from delicious vinyl in early 90's which was in l.a. and gettin flown out quite a bit. all im sayin is for the o.g.'s at least it's tough to pinpoint the only influence on dilla, because there was plenty in addition to him. just do some research

much more ppl than dilla influenced l.a.well im speakin for ppl moreso who been making beats since 90's. ppl seem to forget l.a. hiphop was based off funk which was basslines and hand claps and loose drums at one time.

and i never understood that wonky term to describe beats.
