When achieving that compression then, do you find that it is best to apply mfx12 on the sample/melody and not the drums?

i'd put the compressor on everything. it can help to gel the samples with the drums so they sound less disparate

Usually your kick drum or sub bass will be what you want 'ducking' your other sounds by being the loudest...if something isn't pumping/ducking like you want, drop its volume a little. And yeah usually comp across all samples to glue it together.

i sometimes will compress the entire track, sometimes just the kick and the samples i want to duck out. Sometimes just drums.
