Listening to & Sampling your new finds..

Hey all,

Got a quick question, how do you guys go about listening and sampling your new finds?

Do you get a new record and sample as you listen or do you listen and take notes of what could make a good sample?

Ive done both but also convert the finds to mp3 and pop them on my iPhone to listen to on the way to work.

How do you guys go about it?

I'm spontanious and sample as I find it. I'll quickly chop it up and play with it over a beat. If it don't work, I'll delete all the sounds and move on, sampling a different bit of the record. If not, I'll put the record back on the shelf for another day.

I have the blade runner soundtrack that I've sampled probably a dozen times and still haven't found that perfect chop I'm looking for! One day!

Depends on what I get. I'm bad at making notes and going back so I generally listen to them and sample bits into the sp card banks as I come across them. Sometimes I make a beat on the fly or go away after loop grabbing so I have stuff for the next day with fresh ears. I just try and use the samples in whatever way I can, in the moment and for the future.

Sometimes ill already know the part i want to sample so when i get the track i already know what to record.

Most times when I bought records without hearing them at the record store, I just let the whole record play. And when I hear a part that makes me think "Ohh that's nice!" I repeat it at least one more time, think about what I can do with it and create something.

Total nerd note taker right here, everything I listen to gets ripped onto my mp3 player. I listen to a few hours every day & at work take notes of what's worth sampling (including seconds within the song & description of the potential sample). Those notes end up in a pouch on my fridge so when inspiration's low I'll grab a note & a beer.

Simply listening often and listening closely to your music collection is all you need. Its surprising what you can miss if you don't listen to your collection closely. Even if you never revisit notes you've scribbled you'll find yourself paying more attention to grab and you'll be more familiar with what you can use.

These days I just sit down with a bunch of vinyl next to my decks, plug in the sp and listen through my headphones all chilled on a beanbag, when I hear something I just take the needle back, sample and carry on. I fill up a few banks and then leave it till the next day or whatever, then come back and see what i've got, see if any tunes come, usually there's plenty there to work with. Works much better than when i used to try and sample and make beats in the same session!

This is me too, except with a walkman. I do alot of sampling from VHS so I'll just record the movie into my 4-track and listen to it on my way to work or school. When I hear something I like, i'll make a little tally mark on the cassette where the edge of the reel is, then give a 2-word description on a notecard of what it is, and sample it when I get home. When I get some new records I might listen to them on 78 rpm so I can find samps faster... I like to smoke out a bunch and sample stuff for a few hours straight, then come back to it the next day, so it all seems new. For times when I'm able to multitask, I'll be making a beat on the SP while sampling 12 minutes of something into the MPC. When the time runs out I can quickly navigate the sample and determine if there is anything worthwhile. Not to say I don't appreciate the music haha

I usually run through a stack of records as soon as I take them home... I'll fill a number of banks and then enhance them with effects from my 404, I also flip some samples onto the sp202 then back to the 404 if the sample needs a lo fi crunch or filter

I tend to put sample collections together and then work them out, seeing what works together etc... after I go through a set of samples I will typically discard the majority of them but I always keep drum hits and breaks
