There must be a simpler way of doing this!!

Post by kel »

Ok, here goes...

Basically, I want to pitch up all the samples on my card (OG-404) by 1 semitone. That's it. As we know, this can't be done with the 404 alone, instead we have the crappy warbly "keeping the sample length the same" type of pitch.

I have an MPC2500 that will do this (and the 32mb cards are interchangeable between the two machines) but it takes FOREVER. Here is the process:

1. (404): export sample to card.

2. (MPC): load sample, pitch up sample +1, resample by way of main outs, then adjust start/end points on new sample, overwrite old sample, save to card.

3. (404): import newly-pitched sample.

It's not hard but crazy time-consuming and many of my samples are in loop mode so I have to fine adjust the start/ends again.

I figured there would be some free software where I could drag/drop and pitch these puppies quickly so I did a search on here, ended up downloading something called AKAINATOR or something, but it's more of a time-stretching thing. I'd need a calculator to figure out how to do this simple operation using that stupid thing.

Then I downloaded audacity, and was bummed that out of the 3-4 "pitch" effects offered, they all do the same thing! I wish I had soundforge. Is there anybody out there can offer me some advice?

I'm on a macbook and the MPC2500 has JJos2 1.18

thanks for reading :)

Try reaper for the mac, free to try fully functional
(im on pc but should be similar)
File -> Batch File/Item converter. Drop the files there

go to Use fX - > FX chain -> Add reaPitch (or whatever VST/AU pitch shifter effect you want to add)- adjust to taste, you can chain effects too like compressor, etc

Reload samples to 404

what i do is line up every sample in live on a 1 bar/quarter/whatever on a single track, then record them all using the pitch up one octave, then just use an auto-slicer to turn the single audio track into individuals. by default they should all be dropped in at once at equal distance from each other if you have quantise on i think

I would just resample direct analog into the MP.
What some call loss of fidelity, I would call character.

thanks for the responses guys,

@HxC, I did that for one "song" of 12 pads, and it worked fine although it was just a pain to set the start/ends again.

well, i downloaded reaper and was pleasantly surprised to see that it will just replace the files while they're still in the card reader. nice! However I just can't seem to figure out the pitch thing. It keeps doing that timestretch crap

reaPitch is the one i'm using... I might just say fuckit and sample into the mpc. It's frustrating to wrap my head around the fact that before i went hardware I was good with protools, reason etc... can't say I miss it though, I just probably smoked myself stupid that's all

Oh yeah duh you weren't trying to preserve length, you want the pitch + time to stretch uh .. not sure, but if you can find a VST that batch method would be quick.

hi,
you can try saving time by recording them all to one wav and then pitch that 1 file and then chop them quick and will save you from pitching 12 files.

also if u could somehow change the file headers so that it thought the sample rate was twice what it actually is, that should work

i think doubling the sample rate, will raise the note a whole octave,
havnt been doing audio science lately,so im not shure really, good idea ! though

it's backwards... can be confusing.

if you play a 22khz sample in a machine that plays at 44khz, it will play twice as fast, if you play a 88khz sample in a machine that plays at 44khz, it will play half as fast.. because in one second it will have only read 44000 out of 88000 samples, so it takes 2 seconds to play through what should be 1 second of sound.

Not sure if this is what you were talking about but have you tried resampling to the Mpc and then using auto chromatic assignment then resampling each 1 back into the 404? either way it sounds like a pain in the ass.
