Posted in the tips n tricks section Of the sx forum but thought it might get some more/different kind of attention here:

Hey all, new around these parts. I've read a log about how the sx doesn't have the same compression effect with the vinyl sim and such but am wondering if it's possible to still get that over compressed sound akin to teebs, samiyam, etc. I am almost set on getting the sx but only if this is possible, even if it requires a ton of resampling. I'm mostly comPuter based right now and am looking to add a small, portable sampler to my setup that still allows me computer integration so naturally gravitated towards the 404sx.

I know that this post is all over the place and I apologize if it is confusing at times. Please let me know if you'd like me to clarify anything. Basically, I can achieve the sound I'm looking for in logic but would like the option to do it without my computer but still have all the convenient functions of the sx. Is this asking too much?

Thanks,

Dan

you can still get nice comp on the sx if you use good samples and treat them right

I'm speaking specifically to that ducking/sidechained kind. I don't mean to sound stubborn and like I'm not willing to hear what people are saying but this is very important for me to know before I go ahead with making this purchase. A link to any videos that exhibit what I'm describing would be helpful too.

I actually got an sx a week ago and was wondering the same thing. I checked around on the forums but wasn't 100% sure. I have it now so its not like I will be selling it for an og 404 anytime soon, but if it comes down to that that may be my only route.

This video answered my question a little bit. Not a very quality recording, but illustrates what I'm talking about a little bit more than anything else I've seen.

IMO this is why ducking is better on the OG

the way it works is like this.

you add compression, you turn the volume of the sample you want to duck out very low say to 30. you play a kick, or bass note and the sample ducks out.

-Now, if you do this on the SX, the samples volume will get quiet, and there is a lot of white noise, background hiss.

-if you do it on the OG, the samples volume still remains pretty loud and theres no background hiss or white noise.

you can duck with both but it sounds cleaner on the OG.

If you listen to Jonwayne he uses an SX and actually makes it sound pretty dirty like the OG.

I think you should just get the OG since it seems to be the sound youre looking for and would just be easier then to have to make the SX sound like it.

so I just made a beat using this technique and reading some stuff in another thread about it and this is what I came up with.

http://soundcloud.com/unsignd/fight

Not the best example because I was trying a bunch of stuff out when I did it, but you can hear the hiss come in when it ducks, personally I like it (but it may just be from the cassette). But it doesn't seem to be the strongest ducking effect, I may have to tweak more things.

The way I did this was by recording a loop with loud bass drums and very quiet sample to a cassette, then re-recorded it back into the 404, looped it, and added mfx12 comp. I believe I had the first knob all the way up, as well as the third and the second becomes the release when you turn effect limit on (func + pad 8 )

All the major stuff, actually the voice samples were added in audacity, and I still haven't learned the mute trick so the parts where everything drops out was just edited in audacity too, but the compression and everything else was on the sx

Thank you everyone for the input and response; everyone has been extremely helpful. Ended up ordering the sx; I've been pretty good in the past with getting my machines to do things I want them to do so I'm going to do my best to follow in johnwaynes footsteps :)

Other than that, if I really feel I need the sound the ogs are all over eBay for cheap. Thanks again and I'll keep y'all posted on my progress :)

i got a cheap og 404 on the forums a while back for the same reason, i was using it for a while but missed some of the stuff the sx could do. eventually the og was never getting any play so i just sold it to my friend cause he wanted to make beats. my advice is to just mess with the 404 (og or sx) for a long time. youll find out how it works yourself and learn little tricks and everything else you can do with this little box

my 2 cents

The speed/more functions/zero compressed sound etc of the SX made it more attractive to me than the og 404. I had a 505 with the "magic" compression effect and as cool as it was, it was the only thing it had that my sp555 and sp404sx didn't that i used, so it got sold.

The 404sx comp is pretty good if you get the volume of your samples right, otherwise I agree it can be not so great....still seems better than the B1 comp on the SP555 ? (or are they the same?)
