for anyone interested,a really good alternative to an sp-1200 is this boss br-900 i got-it has a lo-fi "1985 sample" mode where you can set it to 12 bits,and anywhere from 1/2 to 1/8th of 44.1 khz...so with the 1/2 you get about 22 khz-along with the 12 bit it's basically the same rates/depth as the as the 12oo-you get a real simmilar crunchy sound just by running your sampler thru it to another sampler or a recorder/software whatever(it also has 3 options for filters)..and yea,i know "it's the ad da converters of the sp,blah blah..",lol-but to most ears(not neccesarrily producer ears) it'll sound the same,even more so at 1/3,actually.and you can get them or other boss br's with the same feature for just a couple hundred bucks or so...the sp's so damn expensive!everyone talks about the sampletrak sound being the closest to the sp-1200,and i actually have been taking it one step further by running my samples thru the br into my st(sampling at hi fi),either at 45 rpm+8,or pitching them up in the st,resampling them and slowing them back down--which is really where most of the 1200 ring and grit comes from..but sampling directly into the st at 16khz is much more akin to the s9-50 soundwise..which is still dope,but not nearly as crunchy as the 1200.i think i had seen ill green talking about the 1985 sample mode,or "old sample mode", on one of his other roland samplers for swampwater plague?super dope grimy sounding beats on that one...peace!

What I meant with the HD and DD floppy disks is this (taken from the SP 1200 FAQ - http://members.iinet.net.au/~jake2/base/love/faq.html):

"Take any regular 1.44mb High-Density Disk and face it towards your SP, take a piece of electrical tape or any tape and cover the left side. And the 1200 will be Stevie Wonder to what you did."

I used this method way back with the Amiga 500. Just make sure that you
don´t lose the tape in your disk drive

sorry, my bad
i mean that my sp1200 drive reads high density floppy disks too (without having to put electrical tape on them)
don't know which is the manufacturer of this drive.

Even better! Then just try Ebay...I got there more than 100 HD disks for the MPC for roughly 10 EUR including delivery charges.

I dug a little deeper into my Roland VS-840 and I was pleased to discover this effect in the recorder!! It's called "Lo-Fi Box" and the effect description and parameters mention that it "allows you to simulate sounds that appear to be playing on an AM radio, the sounds of old records being played on an old-fashioned gramophone, and even extreme deformations of the sound produced by a lo-fi processor".

Can't wait to use this and hopefully some of the other fx on these projects.

man i could never spend 3000 dollars just for a dope sound unless i significantly increase my income., 10 seconds sampling is ridiculous.
