im using the MPC 1000 + Sp 303 combo now, but what I used to do for velocity on the 303 is....when recording hats for instance, i would tap the pad and then turn the main volume knob left and right.
a little tricky to get the hang of, but it worked for me.
but obviously its a lot easier to control via midi
just thought i'd share this, cause i've found some really cool tips on here, so i thought i'd give back

How can you record the single hit hat loop without recording the other stuff? I mean, your way is cool to do when you use sequencer and one done all the stuff you record the loops in a software so, in that way once you record the hit hat, you can do the trick.
Or am i wrong?
