Fair comment but music is vast and it can sometimes be good to get a little nod in the right direction, especially if you're new to music as a whole. But yeah the best way to learn your gear and music in general is to feel your way naturally, searching is the beauty of it.

i dont mind people looking for samples in that manner. but i personally would rather find my own samples. there is something "less special" about using sample packs IMO. lack of personality i think.

packs are good, because someone put the effort into making the drums sound good and having millions of the buggers doesnt hurt. sometimes when im diggin i just plug the turntable straight into the sp, this doesnt give you the power your drums need, but i find it works awesome with other samples, as you can boost it with filter drive, come to think of it, i rarly power my turntable anymore, i have tons of drums on tape, really cuts the time down of having to find drums everytime you make a beat.

Lately I've noticed a lot of kids appearing on here straight up just asking for samples. Is the next generation really that lazy? I would never of dreamed of doing that.

For me, part of the joy of making music is finding samples, recording noises, designing sounds, chopping up all the acoustic beauty that fills the world. That's the very essence of sampling... or music making in general.

It's like some people just want instant gratification, to straight away be like their favourite producer without walking the road of musical experience.

Maybe they're a product of the current state of our society... or maybe I'm just a bitter old man and should cut them some slack!

They're just asking straight because its places like the SP Forums that offer answers that you may not be able to get face-to-face. I know where I live there's fuck all folks that listen to beats, let alone make them. Face it- what we do and what we make is a niche, its not the mainstream. We should welcome those that take an interest in what interests us.

I can sympathise with these questions because if I asked straight-up questions when I started making music I could've learned loads & gotten better waaay faster. Figuring shit out for yourself takes a long time and can cost a bunch of cash (spent on shit records/CDs/DVDs/VHS/cassettes looking for samples, buying unnecessary gear etc). So why not ask a bunch of dudes who know their shit about the shit that they know? Take it as a complement they look up dudes around here and guide them into being better producers.

If we diss kids trying to get good at making sample based music (of any genre), then we're nothing but a bunch of snobs, elitists and douchebags.

Its that simple.

its easy to tell someone to just "go and find your own samples" but i think the real problem is kids dont know the right avenue to get to new music quickly. The best tool in the world for finding new music in my opinion is going 50 degrees of separation down into youtube related searches, just keep going through related search after related search until youve reached something entirely different. also, sample tapes. they're in every thrift store, they sound fucking fantastic, and theyre cheap and legal. Go to all the thrift stores in your area and cop all the good tapes before someone else does.

i know not everybody holds the same ideals as me when it comes to this shit, but to me, talking about samples and making beats means sounds taken off of old records and tapes and movies and shows, or at least thats where the idea of building with samples stems from (for me), and, again, for me, i had to get out there and just buy a bunch of shit and download a ton of albums by dudes i didn't know about, and watch youtube videos and learn about samples other dudes have used, all that shit, and it was easily a year if not more until i had a minimal grasp on buying the right records and being able to sniff out potential samplable stuff on albums i didn't know about, and even then it was like 3 years until i really felt that i had a 'collectors intuition' about buying the right albums in line with my own tastes that had developed, and its been years since then and i'm STILL learning all the time, on the internet and out in the field, maybe i'm talking about a path that other people aren't interested in taking, but to me they (beat making and record collecting) just go hand in hand, and there is no 'instant gratification' with trying to take that path.....don't get me wrong, its all gratifying in its own way, using goofy samples off of cheesy records and drums from the internet and making beats is super fun and awesome, and then you learn more and look back at those earlier beats, see the strong points and weak points they had, get syked on it all anyway cause its fun and you love it, and realize that you learned more since then and continue on doin it, the whole journey is where the satisfaction comes from, and the longer you do it, the more satisfaction you get out of it, at least thats how it works for me

weird, some dude just PM'ed me the other day asking for the Filthy Pete stuff. I hooked him up cause he was polite and everything. I assume that they are new to all of this we take for granted. If i just got into it i would be blasting my mind with every avenue of finding samples and sound sources, ignoring the extremely easy road, sampling it yourself. But think about this, if you dont have a record player, or know of any sites to get drum breaks, or even know what a drum break is. You gotta start somewhere. Might be laziness but it might be a dude just crawling before he walks cause it takes some know-how to chop a sample let alone, find a break with kick snare and hats that you can use. I remember the first time i used fruityloops, i went to every website i could, grabbed every sample i could find (back in the 56k days) then made a million shitty beats. then i realized i could sample them, so i sampled every Cd my mom had in the house (mostly luther vandross and sade and some phil collins). If i look back now, i was a total tool, but you gotta start somewhere, even if it seems lazy to us. We've grown accustomed to doing things the hard way with these limiting ass sample boxes, but like i said, you gotta start somewhere.
