Thinking about purchasing a 202. Advice?

Post by Eureka »

I'm bum ass broke, and an sp 202 is all I can afford. I honestly wanted an sp 404 for what I believe is the tumbling effect, the one which stutters the beat to a varying degree? The time effect would suffice I suppose.

My question is, to someone with little money, how does the 202 stack up with the 404? And, can you guys provide me with examples of beats made with the thing, just to hear how it sounds? Thanks in advance.

theyre in two completely different worlds. 202 is very minimal, your not guna be getting any stutter fx or anything but you will get a good lowpass filter, good pitching, and its got a great lo-fi sound, drums sound dirty as fuck on it. downside is there's no resampling so your gonna have to record into something like a tape player and record it back in to a pad. its the most primitive way of making beats that i know of, but the shit will teach you some discipline.

it depends on what you need
if you need polyfony don't cop this sampler.

but in the other hand i love this machine
it got a very characteristic sound

the filters and Ring-modulation are real DOPE

here are a couple of beats i've done with the 202 + 303 combo

The 202 is a dope little beast. You will find it very limiting but that can breed some great creativity.

The 404 has WAY more features, completely different leagues. It may be worth saving for that if it's all you're gonna have. Or maybe a 303?

i might get the 202 for dirt cheap and already own the 404 but hate the fact i can't play a loop and record a synth on top of it. you know what i mean? but with the 202 you can play a pad on loop and record a synth directly into the 202, correct? also how is the pitch on the 202 since the 404 lacks good pitch.

if the 202 can record directly in with a loop and have good pitch, it seems like a done deal to me!

i mean it's not possible to have a pad on the 404 going, while recording any other sound with ext. source on....for instance i can't have a drum loop playing and record a synth on top of that, it will just cut the drum loop off.
