OG 404 + What Else?
sorry this has been done to death...
if you were going to pair an OG 404 with something else what would it be and why? i'm not concerned with velocity or pad feel but slightly frustrated with the sequencer. another sampler? a sequencer? midi controller? mpc's are out of the question. let's keep it cheap and small.
considered:
303
202
qy-70
su-10
sampletrak
mpd 18
any pros and cons for each?
i like workarounds and keeping it all in one box, but too often find myself arranging in garageband then sampling the whole beat into the 404 and want to get away from this. so if you could pair the OG 404 with only one thing what would it be?

Re: OG 404 + What Else?
have u tried making songs via re-sampling over and over?
it works good if u don't like bothering with the sequencer
and even though mpc's are "out of the question" i would consider an mpc 2000 (og or xl) because there relatively cheap (i picked up mine for around 300) and paired up with the 404 its a deadly combo. the sequencer is solid, and has real pitch unlike the 404. i hear the midi on the 404 is janky too (although i've never tried using it) so u might have some trouble using a sequencer with it

Re: OG 404 + What Else?
yeah i gotta get more practice with the resampling--i think that's the key. or use the 99-bar-sequencer-metronome-off technique.
i've used a 303 and dr-202 combo with midi but not tried any midi on the 404. guess i will stay away from that.
$300 is a good deal for any mpc but still not $100 cheap. i'd like to stay away from screens and menus if possible.
leaning towards sp-202 since it wouldn't involve midi, is dirt cheap, aesthetically perfect and zero learning curve.

i used to use a dp02 multitrack, thats how i would sequence all my stuff out.
sample into the sp303, play everything out live on the sp303 and record track-by-track into the dp02.
then i would track the dp02 out to my cassette tape recorder and then onto the pc for download/bandcamp, etc.

404 and 505 is my combo of choice right now. MPC1k is just sitting under the dust cover
2fx, large sample times, proper sequencing and ultimate resampling/bouncing action!

Right now it's Roland MS1 + 404sx
It's been Microsampler +404SX also recently

microsampler looks real sick and you can get it for just over $200 new right now.
think i'm gonna stick with the cassette deck though. it allows mute group performance with delete mode and solves the ext source problem.

Re: OG 404 + What Else?
microsampler si really dope, but it's almost better to sample your performance into the 404. it make some much shit the 404 can't do.
the sequencer actually works, the keyboard mode is dope to make wierd ass synth.
effect are soso compared to 404, i don't use them much. ability to chop as you sample is dope (but you gotta work on it cause it's a lil sketchy) pitch and timestrech works really good.
anyway it's a good buy. I don,t use it that much atm but i don't pln on selling it.
