... i could just hold down the PATTERN SELECT button, press the number of 1-12 and let go of the PATTERN SELECT button, to rapidly change? Instead of pushing P.S. -> pattern number -> P. S. again, it would be a very rapid 2-pad change (much like the Effect grab thingie, although that works differently).

Is there a way to get around the sluggish 3-tap method of pattern select? thx in advance

i'm pretty sure you can do this by holding either 'subpad' or 'hold' and hitting your desired sequence... on my OG404
