soundproofing windows?

Post by kel »

does anybody know what is best to put over a window to keep the sound out? i'm in a ground floor apt at the corner of a complex, so the 2 walls to the outside (the center and right walls in the picture) are pretty thick, but you can hear through the windows a mile away. any suggestions? i'm not worried about low freqs because i'll have headphones on. i just don't want anybody hearing me yelling at the top of my lungs into the mic...

Thanks for the quick responses. Culp that's a great idea  all i really have is blankets and duct tape, so i think i'll tape a bunch of boxes together in the shape of the window, then wrap blankets around that and wedge it into the indentation. thanks guys!

what i used to do is use chunks of foam, or insulation, and block the windows with that (i'd sometimes use books to keep the foam in place).

then, i'd hang comforters / blankets from the ceiling, and make a lil room-inside-a-room, then set up the mic and sing in there.

it gets hotter than satan's hookers, but it blocks the sound a bit.

I'd recommend getting some cut foam, probably the size of the window, to fit over it. You could then make some panels, again covered in foam, to slide over the window when recording.

You could use some sort of sealant to cover any air gaps in the window or try and re-seal the window when closed with thicker foam or rubber tape around the edge of the windows.

I wouldn't recommend cardboard as its absorption coefficient is really low and it wouldn't do much at all!

For true soundproofing you need extremely dense material and a combination of different materials to slow down sound through these materials and to stop vibrations. Thats why you use a room within in a room etc.
