SP-404 have sampling mode like mpc?

Post by Chewbacca »

Possibly a play-samples as the MPC? For after you push the next sample, previous stop.(1 voice polyphony)

nope, you will have to gate the samples and use abit of reverb if required.

i think you're talking about the "mute groupe" thing.
well, all the sps don't do that, except the sp606. (don't know for the 808 in reality)...

i think he's on about mpc programs, as in set the program to "mono" for single pad play back.

@ella- i'm suprised you haven't got an 808 somewhere in your spot. it's like a treasure cave.

yes, the mute group do that. it's an mpc feature to stop/gate pads between the chosen ones (group). the sp606 do that too.

ot
the sp808 always tempting me, but i'm sceptic about its internal sequencer: it doesn't loop patterns,no? i mean it's like a sampler/recorder in sync or something like that? well, now i have an mc-909 wich has this and more, but a friend of mine told about the 808, he used it at the end on 90s and told me that it has quality sound, quality pitch and nice fx...
anyway until now i didn't see it under 300€ here in france, so it's a little overpriced i think...

What's the delete-mode trick? Twin SP's? What? Does this involve hitting the delete key, and while you're supposed to be previewing pads to select to delete, recording those preview pad presses with another SP? Or is there some other sampler sorcery? HOW HOW HOW?

Yeah, 606 got Mute Groups and possibly the 505. I could be wrong but I think it can be done on the 303 by using the Remain or Cancel button, or at least a workaround.

The 555 might too, but thats the only SP I never touched or saw physically.

the remain/cancel technique is the best workaround for reaching a sort of mute group for 303/404 machines. unfortunately the 505 doesn't do mute group (but it does mute parts -it mutes tracks and you can record that eventually-) but you can use the same workaround as for 303/404. same thing for the 555.
glad to see that the 808 does mute group too.

that technique (remain/cancel not delete) is something you can perform with for example the isolator effect (the eq effect is another one etc): everytime you don't want a sample sounding, you can press that buttons to select/unselect that sample with that effect in a way that they are excluded temporarly from the playing.
this is not exactly a mute group but it's however a cool workaround.

Delete mode acts like one big mute group (choke): you can only "preview" (listen) one sample at a time, so when you press another pad this new sample will sound and the last one will stop. Much like what you get from open/closed hi-hats, crash choke or mono synths.

Having two SPs (or just any other sampler/recorder/looper/etc along with your SP) will allow you to sample this exciting "Delete Mute Group" action, since when you're in Delete mode everything else is disabled - like Sampling/Resample and Loop Capture with the 555 - rendering that function useless for anything other than live playback.

delete mode is a good creative trick but it kinda sucks, compared to the loop switch trick,

keep both samples on loop and slap at the same time while on is off,

you can also set them to trigger mode inbetween and do little hip hop tricks.
